Carbon Rods

Our names are Jay-Jay and Jose. Our title for our science fair project was Electricity: How Does It Work? In our project we briefly studied carbon rods and how particles move in an object.

We chose this subject because it was pretty easy. This subject was easy because you don't need that many materials and also because my brother knew a lot about this subject.

Our problem was how the particles moved in the carbon rods when electricity is passed through them. Our hypothesis was that the carbon rods were going to heat up and make a bright spark when you touch them together.

To make our project work we needed carbon rods, copper wire, and a battery. We connected the carbon rods to the wires and the wires to the batteries. Then we touched the carbon rods together.

When we touched the carbon rods together, sparks flew. Well actually there was only one bright perpetual spark.

We came to the conclusion that the bright sparks were the particles moving from rod to rod and that the particles heated the air white hot. We also came to the conclusion that the rods got hot because of the particles moving in the rods. We think that our project can be applied in many ways to the real world. For one thing, we could make a really bright search light or maybe a heater. We think that if you sit down and think about it you can come up with many things we didn't mention.

I think we both agree that doing the experiment was the easiest part of the project. We also agree that the hardest part was probably doing all the research about carbon rods and electricity. There weren't really any surprises in our project. Everything that was supposed to happen, happened.

We think we did a pretty good job researching our subject. We think we could improve our experiment by testing the carbon rods with more and less electricity.

We really don't like the science fair that much. Mostly because we think we don't have enough time to do all we wanted to do. We think the science fair could be improved by giving the students more time and make it so it's not worth so many marks. We think the science fair should be more of a fun thing rather than a mark thing.

We think the most important thing that we learned from the science fair is comunicating with strangers. Comunication is very important this day and age.
