Problem:
What is the effect of pH levels of different substances on the pH of tea?
Hypothesis:
We believe hat adding different substance to tea will change it's original pH level.
Materials:
- Measuring cup -pH paper -Thermometer -lemon -sugar -Measuring spoon - spoon -cream -lime -syrup -mug -tea -honey -milk
Procedure:
1) Measure one cup of boiling water, pour into mug and let steep.
2) Take temperature of tea and make a note.
3)Test the pH of the tea and test the pH of one of the substances. Record.
4) Add 5 teaspoons of the substance to the tea.
5) Stir the solution and test the pH. Record.
6)Repeat steps 1-5 with the remaining substances.
Results:
Both the substances and the tea were acidic. Only when highly acidic substances caused a noticeable change in the pH level.
Conclusion:
There wasn't a consistent change in the pH level when the substances were added to the tea. Only adding certain substances changed the pH of the tea.
Application:
Since all pH level were acidic, drinking tea is not be a good way to relive an upset stomach. People should be aware to choose a better alternative for indigestion.
Did Well:
We kept all our variable controlled.
Problems:
Boil a kettle of tea and test less amounts so too much tea is not wasted. Use a pH meter to test the pH levels for better accuracy. Test different amounts of each substance to compare.
