How Lions Got Their Manes

This book is dedicated to my Gramma and my family

Thousands of years ago lions did not have manes.  They had hair down their spine.

A lion lived near a lake.

He hid in bushes because people made fun of him.
One day the lion got an idea that he will shave his back.
He grabbed his shaver and shaved his back.

A man who lived in a cottage near a lake, the man was jealous that he could shave his back.

After the lion shaved the hair, the hair stopped growing on his back.
But the hair was growing around his neck and some of it was on top of his neck and some of it was on top of his head.

The lion said, "Man, I like this look.  It looks good on me."

The man said, "You got the hair you wanted," and they became friends.
That is why all lions have manes today.

The Legend of the Orphan Girl and Shooting Star

This book is dedicated to my friend who had no home and my family.

One night in a little town there was an orphan academy.  There were 20 kids with no home.

One Friday afternoon all the children got adopted except for one lonely child.  The people who took care of children thought they were all gone, so they left.

The little girl ran outside.  She heard people breaking the Academy down.  Instead of staying near the Academy she hid in someone's backyard.

She stayed overnight and stayed awake.  She looked at the stars and saw a shooting star.

She saw a thin tall person in the sky.  The person just grabbed the star.

Well, the girl stood up and she made a wish at the shooting star.  She wished she could fly.

The sky person roared, "Hey you can't be up here!  It's my star."

So she grabbed the shooting star out of the person's hand and threw it high in the sky.

The sky person stayed up there and with the star, but never took it.

Oh, and the little girl came down and an adult adopted her.

She really liked the house.

When the adult showed her room she was so excited she started to jump on the bed.

She saw a big toy box.

She saw a telescope with its own stand.

She poked her eye and she saw the shooting star.

When the little girl looked at it again, it twinkled.

Every night the little girl would poke her eye in the telescope and look at the little star.  She would say goodnight and it would twinkle.

How the Turtle Got a Shell

This book is dedicated to my niece Michaela

Long ago the turtle had no shell.

She kept on getting sunburned and rocks thrown at her.

She wanted to have a shell because it would protect her and give her a place to hide.

She tried rock, wood and she tried to bury herself in the sand - but none of these things worked and she was very sad.

She found a round, hollow, light shell at the beach.

It had six holes.

She put it on, she put her head through one hole and her feet through the other 4 holes.  It fit perfectly.

She was very happy that she didn't have to wear a rock on her back.
She came home to her husband and he asked, "Why do you have a shell on your back?"
"Because the kids at the park were throwing rocks at me and I got sun burned, so I went out and got a shell," answered his wife.
They had babies and they all had shells and from that day forward all turtles have shells.

How the Sabertooth Tiger Got His Small Tail

I dedicate this book to my father and my mother

Once upon a time there was a sabertooth tiger that lived in Canada.

He had a long grey furry tail that he really didn't like because he kept tripping on it.

He tried to get it off but he couldn't reach his tail.

He was fooling around and he didn't notice a farmer walking to the lake.  He came from far away.

The farmer was a fisherman.  He started to fish.  He knew a lot about different kinds of fish.

The tiger told the farmer about his problem. The farmer told him to put his tail in the very cold lake.

His tail fell off his body because it froze. The tiger felt better with a short tail.

And that is how the sabertooth tiger got his short tail!!
