The Project Eight classes at Faraday School decided to do an extensive project on Native Studies. Each class would choose the area of native studies which they wanted to know more about, and their results would be shared with the other classes. Many classes called upon the expertise of Gary Robson, a native elder, for information about customs and lifestyles, and of Joe Halas, the Art Consultant for the Winnipeg School Division. The buttons at the top of this page will take you to the work done by each class. However, first you may wish to see information about the Sharing Circles, which enabled classes to display their various form of artwork to each other and to describe what they did, and the Art Gallery, a culmination of the work to which the whole school and the community were invited. Many of the classes began with a study of the works of well-known Canadian Native artist Norval Morrisseau. They found these works moving and inspiring, and gained new insights into Native art through learning about them. Click on the following links if you wish to know more about Norval Morrisseau. On June 13, 2001, the doors of the Faraday School Art Gallery opened with a display of art done by the Grade 4-6 students as a result of their project on Native Studies. In actual fact, it was the school gym which was temporarily transformed into an art gallery. Every student and teacher in the school, and the whole community around it, was invited in for a piece of bannock and a drink of lemonade. Then all could tour the exhibits, to the strains of aboriginal music played by various school ensembles led by music teacher Helen LaRue.
A display of books met the eye at the entrance to the gallery. These had been written by the grade four classes after a study of Native Legends. Some of the visitors to the gallery tried to read them all!
