Objectives:
1. To help children use words to express thoughts, feelings ,opinions and ideas.
2. To help children increase vocabulary and use language in different ways. ( i.e. to express needs and feelings, to solve problems, to predict happenings, and for social interaction.)
3. To help children :
| Understand that pictures and symbols have meaning. | |
| Understand the purpose of books . | |
| Respect books and love listening to and reading books. |
4. To help children develop thinking and problem solving skills.
The children need to know:
| What materials are needed and where to find them when | |
| choosing an activity. | |
| What to do if a child is playing with a toy and another child takes it away. | |
| How to build block/lego structures with balance and symmetry. | |
| How to sort and classify maths materials etc. |
5. To build self esteem and self confidence by
| Providing daily challenges and successes. ( i.e. doing more difficult puzzles, learning how to use glue) | |
| Giving children responsibility for changing and planning centres. | |
| Having classroom helpers. | |
| Allowing children to build self esteem by helping others. | |
| Helping children build strengths by responding to and using information they bring into the classroom. | |
| Support children in areas which cause difficulty. | |
| Give lots of specific positive verbal reinforcement. |
6. To recognize what the child is like physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually in order to provide an appropriate program of activities for her/him.
7. To develop skill necessary for future success.
8. To involve parents/caregivers and other members of the community as much as possible, and to help these adults understand how young children learn and develop.
The above objectives are accomplished through words, gestures, music, art, drama, stories, computer, large body movement and play with equipment and materials that can be used in many different ways in a large variety of activity learning centres.
Activity centres are established in the room according to the children’s needs and development and the philosophy of the program . Children are encouraged to move within the entire space, becoming involved in a variety of centres. Activities at the centres encourage the learning of concepts included in the curricula.
9. To create a classroom environment where everyone feels welcome, comfortable, and valued by:
| Encouraging parents, volunteers and special visitors into our classroom | |
| Creating a parent involvement committee as an extension of the Nursery Program. | |
| Inviting parents and visitors to bring in books and resources and materials from all cultures. |
10. To actively involve parents/caregivers in their child’s learning and to provide resources which can be used at home by
| Inviting parents/caregivers to participate in our “Parent-Child Mother Goose Program.” “Parent –Child Mother Goose” runs for an hour and fifteen minutes once a week for ten weeks from the beginning of Feb. to the middle of April. This program focuses on the pleasure and power of rhyme and oral story telling . It enhances parents understanding of the language and learning needs of young children by giving the parents the tools to playfully engage with their child. | |
| Establishing a Parent-Child Toy and Resource Lending Library. | |
| Provide a Rock and Read Program in May and June in order to maintain the connection to school during those months when the Nursery program is not available. |
