 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES - 2006 - 2007

GRADE 4 - ROOM 14 - MRS. ANNE BENNETT                                               

            Welcome to room 14.  I hope your child has a happy productive year.

             The grade four reading program has two components; a structured reading program at your child's reading level and novel studies.  These two programs will be on going throughout the year.

             The goal of the reading program is to increase your child's understanding of content.  This will be carried out by extending the more sophisticated comprehension skills such as making inferences, predicting outcomes and drawing conclusions.  There is also a component of vocabulary building; your child will not only learn to read the words but understand their meanings.

             The novel study program involves reading a number of preselected novels, which have been chosen for their sound literary content and writing styles.  The novels will be introduced by chapters with a variety of related activities for each chapter.

             The new math curriculum includes the following units:

                                    - Patterns and Problem Solving

                                    - Data Management

                                    - Geometry

                                    - Measurement

                                    - Number Concept and Number Operations

            We will be using many concrete materials to help your child understand what they are learning.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

            Includes mapping skills, locating and naming continents and oceans and the study of Canada.

SCIENCE:

            This year, we will be introducing the new Pan Am Science curriculum.  The areas are:

HEALTH:

            The health units involve; social-emotional well being, nutrition, our bodies, personal safety, problem solving and a Second Step Program.  The Family Life program will be taught separately over a three month period.  Lions Quest Program will be ongoing this year.

             As homework, please read with your child every evening.

ASSESSMENT:

            Assessment of your child is ongoing throughout the year.  Our process of evaluation uses testing, daily work and observation.

                        Agendas will go home every day with any homework or notes.  Please sign them every day and be sure they are returned to school daily.
