Educational Technology Ideas & Initiatives

The purpose of this page is to provide links to a variety of educational resources in which the Educational Technology team has been involved:

  •    "Bits and Bytes"
This educational newsletter, which is published nine times each school year, began in "hard copy" format in October, 1984. "Bits and Bytes" moved over to the web in October, 1995 and now recipients can receive an e-mail notification when the latest issue has been published to the web by contacting the editor at: bitsandbytes@wsd1.org
  •    Digital Storytelling
With the advent of  Microsoft's "Photo Story 3" freeware for XP computers, many students and staff are showcasing their creativity by blending digital photos together with their own voice into a multimedia celebration to share digital stories. The above link points to an extensive list of resources.
  •    Educational Activities
This resource provides a number of teacher-created education resources that are sorted by curriculum area. Each area contains activities that are listed according to grade level. Users on these resources are encouraged to provide feedback and submit activities that they have created and found to be exemplary.

  •    Images for Sharing
Educators are always looking for royalty-free images to enhance their teaching. This resource provides a series of digital photos which were taken by Divisional employees and are available for sharing. Individuals are welcome to submit pictures for sharing provided they do not include student images.
  •    Internet Safety
A series of resources were compiled to help educators and parents teach children how to use the Internet safely. Users are encouraged to contact any member of the Educational Technology team to provide additional links as the Internet and students' uses evolve.
  •    On-Line Surveys
Our Educational Technology team developed an innovative mechanism to conduct on-line surveys. This process was used to gain anonymous data from teachers as self-assessments of both their personal technology skills and pedagogical skills.
  •    Learning Together Conference Activities
Each year innovative lessons and activities are designed for our Divisional Learning Together Conference. Starting in 2002, a series of these resources were shared with educators using the Internet. Although these activities are free for download and use within in your classrooms, please reference the authors when using or sharing the activities.

  •    SWiSH Resources
The purpose of this web site is to list a series of resources for educators who are integrating the use of the "SWiSH" multi-media software into their teaching. Both the older SWiSH (Version 2) and the newer SWiSHMAX creations and resources will be made available on this web site.
  •    Technology Outcomes
To assist educators in integrating technology into their teaching, this technology outcomes continuum guide  was developed in 1997 and revised in 2002-2003. The guide, which ranged from K - S1, encouraged student and staff to develop  competencies in "Technology Literacy", "Communication Literacy" and "Information Literacy".
