Earl Grey School is currently involved in several video conferencing projects and we have been acting as mentors to several schools from across Canada who are new to this technology. Next week, our grade 4/5/6 students will be meeting their video conferencing partners from Vernon River Consolidated School in Prince Edward Island for the first time. We are also hoping to have a project with Ursala Franklin School in Toronto up and running in the next several weeks. Plans are also underway to meet with more of our NIS partners via this medium before the end of the school year.
Pictured Above:
Earl Grey students Jesse, Jamie, and Krystin are shown during our very first
contact with Parkside School in Camden, New Jersey. This was a "getting
acquainted session"...isn't it funny how even kids begin by talking about the
weather?
Denise Faimon is the Computer Teacher at Parkside Elementary School in Camden, New Jersey. We are planning to"connect" with Denise and some of her students shortly after the Christmas Break. The initial focus for our videoconferencing sessions will be on the similarities and differences between our cities, states/provinces, and countries. As part of our study of Canada, students at Earl Grey have produced travel brochures for each of our provinces and territories that they are anxious to share with the students in Camden.
The students at Earl Grey will be beginning a science unit on flight after the Christmas break. We are hoping that Denise and her students in Camden will assist us by taking part in several experiments with paper airplanes. Students from both schools will be asked to design identical paper airplanes that they will then test for things such as distance travelled. The students will then be asked to share their test results, their ideas for design improvement, and their thoughts on the factors that may have affected their planes flight performance .such as updrafts etc. We are hoping to make this a very exciting, interactive exchange!
The students have written short autobiographies, that will be e-mailed to the students in Camden prior to our first on-line session, as a way of introducing themselves. We are really looking forward to our "Cyber Trip" to Camden and hope to Cu Soon!
Last spring, during our Young Scientists' Days event, several teachers from St. Ignatius School in Winnipeg paid us a visit to watch our junior high students work with scientific sensors and probes. As a result of this visit and ongoing discussion, St. Ignatius has purchased a number of the probes and sensors. We are planning several videoconferencing sessions where our science teacher and students will demonstrate a particular probe or sensor, and then teach the other class how to set up their probes/sensors and computer interfaces. We have chosen to use NetMeeting so that we can share applications. Hopefully, we will get to the point where the two classes will be running simultaneous experiments and sharing their results, writing joint lab reports, etc.
