SCIENCE IS......FUN!
All of the junior high classes at Earl Grey School work with specialized probes and sensors. These instruments interface with the computers in our Hewlett Packard Technology Centre and allow students to collect, manipulate, and display data in a variety of ways. These sensors and probes can be used in the science lab, in the computer lab, and in the field.
In the pictures above some of the grade seven girls are shown downloading data they have collected. The purpose of this experiment was to discover if salt added to a liquid, in this case water, would affect its freezing point. Prior to beginning the experiment the students were asked to predict their results. Working in small groups, the students then mixed their salt-water solution in test tubes, set up their temperature sensors and interfaces for remote data collection, and then headed outside. Upon their return indoors, the students downloaded and displayed the data they collected. Printouts of the data, in a graph format, were produced by each group for comparison purposes. While waiting for the data to be printed, the students completed the first part of their lab reports on the computer...the purpose, the hypothesis, and the procedure. During the next class period the students will compare and analyze their results and finish their lab reports.
