According to legend, if the groundhog sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, it means spring is just around the corner. Is the groundhog a good predictor of weather? This is the question that Mrs. Vidal's grade 1, 2, & 3 students will be attempting to answer through their participation in Project Groundhog! More than 100 schools from across North America are taking part in this six-week project. Each of the participating classrooms will begin by naming their groundhog and then predicting if he/she will see his/her shadow on Groundhog Day. For the next six weeks the students will track local weather temperatures and conditions that they will share with their team mates. What do you think, do the groundhogs of North America know what they are "talking about"?
We are part of the Nibbler Squirrels team and we will be sharing our predictions, temperatures/weather conditions, poems, drawings, stories, valentines, groundhog research, and a description of our community with our team mates through e-mail and through this website.
Project Groundhog 2000 has now been completed! If you are interested in participating in Project Groundhog 2001 or would like more information about this project please visit the main Project Groundhog website! We would love to have you join us for next year's project!
