"PROJECT GROUNDHOG 2001"

According to legend, if the groundhog sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, it means spring is just around the corner.  Is the groundhog a good predictor of weather?  This is the question that Mrs. Hackett's Grade 3 and 4 students and Mrs. Lewis' Grade 2 and 3 students will be attempting to answer through their participation in Project Groundhog 2001!  More than 200 schools from across North America and Europe representing over 5000 students are taking part in this six-week project.  Students will be working in teams made up of approximately ten classrooms in each.  The participating classrooms will begin by naming their groundhog mascots and then predicting if he/she will see his/her shadow on Groundhog Day.   For the next six weeks the students will track local weather temperatures and conditions that they will share with their teammates.   What do you think, do the groundhogs of North America know what they are "talking about"?
