Cost of Living

By Kelci

Cost of living is the average amount of money needed to satisfy the basic needs like housing, food and clothing.

Average Household Expenditures for Winnipeg

This graph shows the expenditures of an average Winnipeg family.  This graph assumes that every Winnipegger has the same expenditures, which is not true, but it does give you a good idea of the percentages a person living in Winnipeg might have for household expenditures.

In this graph, it shows that the average Winnipegger spends the most money on shelter (28%) every year and the least on games of chance and reading materials(1% each). The second and third largest expenditures are transportation (17%) and food (16%). The second smallest expenditures are education, personal care and miscellaneous (2% each).

My Family's Household Expenditures

This graph shows the percentages that my family usually spends on household expenditures over the duration of one year. Now, I will compare the two graphs.

Once again, in this graph shelter costs the most, but instead of 28%, it's 27%, so my family's pretty average so far. The smallest expenditures on this graph are reading material, personal care, health care and games of chance(1% each). On the first graph, both rading material and games of chance are 1% each, just like for my family. For personal and health care, my family spends a bit less than the average Winnipegger, maybe because of health plans from work or something.   For transportation, the average Winnipegger spends 17% of their household expenditures money on it, but my family spends 19%, which is pretty average, since it's only 2% more. It's probably a bit higher than most Winnipeg people because we do a lot of driving for trips and to get to water polo.
