"Spring and Winter Definitions"
EARL GREY SCHOOL
(Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada)
Hello Fellow Nibblers,
We have had very unusual weather during the last six weeks! This week, the students in Room 13 put together a description of our winters as well as a description of our weather now. What do you think...has spring arrived in Winnipeg?
OUR DESCRIPTION OF WINTER IN WINNIPEG!
In winter, Winnipeg's temperature is way below zero and the windchill factor makes it extremely dangerous for frostbite. We can only be outdoors for short periods of time.
Everything is white in Winnipeg over the winter because the snow does not melt for months on end. Birds have flown south and pets and farm animals in Manitoba grow thicker fur. Our rivers and lakes are frozen solid!
We snowshoe, cross country ski and skate on outdoor ice rinks. We play ice hockey outdoors and basketball indoors.
SPRING - IS IT HERE IN WINNIPEG ALREADY?
The temperatures are above zero most days. The sun shines most days and we have had no snow for weeks! The snow has melted on the streets and in our yards. Our days are getting longer and the sun rises around 7 a.m. now. We have puddles in the school yard and on the streets. We have seen several Canada geese already! People are wearing sweatshirts or spring jackets outdoors, instead of parkas, mitts, scarves and boots. Some of our trees are starting to bud. The rivers are flowing, but they are full of ice! BUT - no sign of the robins yet and it is still -14 Celcius at night! The robins return to Winnipeg in Spring.
