"Correspondence"![]()
Dear Team Members,
We are excited to join the Nibbler Squirrels team for Project Groundhog. We want to
learn about where you live as well as learn about groundhogs. We live in Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada and our city is almost in the middle
of Canada. We are quite close to the U.S.A border. This is a city where we
have a very cold, long winter.
Today we did some experiments with our shadows. It is a sunny afternoon and we saw
our shadows in the classroom and outside at recess. We made puppets with our hands
indoors and we did body actions outside to
see what happened to our shadows. We did this to help us make our predictions about
Groundhog Day and whether our groundhog, Snoozer, will see his shadow tomorrow. Our
class at Earl Grey School is an Alternative class with grades 1, 2, & 3 together.
There are 24 of us including Mrs. Vidal, our teacher. Please write back to
us!
Yours truly,
Room 13 students - Earl Grey School
Hello everyone,
Just a quick welcome from the grade three Science classes at North Shore Elementary.
We are very excited about the project and look forward to the next 6 weeks of
groundhog fun.
From Chubby at N.S.E.
Dear Nibblers,
How very kewl that Earl Gray is hosting a site for us! We are really enjoying our
involvement with Project Groundhog here in the 3rd grade of Village East Elementary School
(Cherry Creek School District) in Aurora (near Denver), Colorado.
We think our groundhog Shadow has been right on target with its prediction so far-- no
shadow; early spring. We had a 68 F degrees day yesterday!! Trees are budding out
and bulbs are peeking up through the ground. Of course, we here in Colorado know
this could be a trick and we could have a huge snowfall tomorrow morning, only to be
wearing shirtsleeves by late afternoon. What a state for interesting weather!
Anyone interested in pen pal adventures or cyberpal links? There are 23 3rd graders in my
class. We already have pen pals in northern Michigan, but would entertain the idea
of more correspondence as we are getting pretty good at letter writing! :-)
Cheers,
Mary MacKay
Hello Fellow Nibblers,
We are alive and well at LeGallais Memorial School. We had a wind storm on Jan. 15th
with winds in excess of 150 kilometres per hour. This blew our satellite dish which
controls our internet access in school off course, so our internet has been down pretty
much ever since. I had to telephone Bill to get my first week's data sent out.
We were lucky enough to get into the system on Friday so I got all my email up to
that date. I just got my own computer online this weekend so this is the first time
I've been able to contact anyone. We are working on our activities and have made up
our own groundhog poem. (See the LeGallais Memorial School's
community page!) We are working on our community description right now.
Let me tell you that we are a grade 3 class of 12 students(4 girls and 8 boys). We
attend a k-12 school in our community. Next year we will become a K - 9
school. Winter here was great up until we started this project. Now we have
freezing temperatures one day and then plus temperatures the next. I'll do a more
detailed letter with our community description in my next message which I hope to send you
later this week. Just a little tidbit of information - Isle aux Morts is French for
Island of the Dead. We are not French and we are not on an island, unless you count
Newfoundland as being an island, which it is. Newfoundland is referred to by people
who live here as 'the rock'.
Ernestine Baggs (LeGallais Memorial School)
Hi my name is Jenelle McAuley and I am from Newfoundland. I am in grade 3 and we are taking part in the groundhog project. We are a part of the Nibbler team. I think it is very cool that you have us on your web page. We don't have a school web page yet, but our teacher hopes that we will have one next year. This project is a lot of fun.
Hello Fellow Nibbler Squirrels:
It has been great reading the community descriptions that I've received so far. I'm
at home because our internet is still not working at school. We finally got it up
and running and less than 24 hours later it was down again - our satellite dish was in the
process of falling down and had to be taken down. So here I am at home doing this.

Susan Lindberg (St.James, New York)
Hi Fellow Nibbler Squirrels,
We have enjoyed participating in this project.
This is my second year taking part in the project and I hope to be able to
participate again next year.
My children are very conscious about the temperature now. We have had a week of
unusually warm weather and because of that have lost almost all of our snow. This is
certainly a sign of spring but we haven't seen any robins yet, and this is a real sign of
spring. It has been below zero for the last couple of days but we have not had any
snow. We are expecting freezing rain
later today.
I will try to send a good-bye message after I enter the last of my data later this week.
Thanks to everyone who sent messages to us.
'Bye for now,
Ernestine Baggs, Grade 3
LeGallais Memorial School
Hi Nibbler Squirrels,
We are nearing the end of our project. Wow these 6 weeks just flew... We are a little
behind, but are hoping to catch up this week. Technology is great but very easy to fall
behind when things are not working properly...
Belinda Loder - North Shore Elementary School
Hi to all,
Here in St. James we have been very busy with a million things. I am sorry if we
have not been on line as much as we should have. One plus is that we have been
keeping the daily weather updates and have come to the conclusion that our local groundhog
is right. Spring is right around the corner or here already. Today,
Friday, March 10 it is going to be about 70 degrees on Long Island. Boy are we
thrilled.
Susan Lindberg - St. James, New York
Hi all! Just about finished, eh! I would
like to thank you all for your contributions to the Nibbler Squirrel website. If you
have anything else to send...pictures, community descriptions, creations, etc. please do
so. We are planning on leaving the site up year round as a way to encourage other
schools to join us for next year's project. Our students have learned a lot
and have been chomping at the bit each morning to see if anything new has been posted on
our site or if anyone has signed our guestbook.
Our weather here has been fantastic...breaking 100 year records for 5 days straight...and
then reality set in and today we woke up to a cold, super windy, and cloudy day! We
thought for sure Spring was in the air...but living in Manitoba we know that we can never
count on Spring until at least the middle of May. We are really looking forward to
our "Spring Break" at
the end of the month.
I know this is always a super busy time of year for everyone so,
once again, I would like to thank you all for your contributions in making this project a
wonderful experience for our students! Hope to hear from you soon!
Bye'
Merle (Earl Grey School)
Hello to all,
Sorry but we have been off line for a while here, something with these classroom
machines. But we are done with tracking and my students certainly know how to
predict, figure out averages etc from this project. We in this classroom believe
that you can rely on the groundhog. His prediction of an early spring on Long Island
came true. Thanks to all.
Susan Lindberg and her Nibblers.
Hi All,
I was planning to be in Coley's Point for the final results today but I have three sick
children and will be off the doctor in an hour. I just want to let you all know that
the results are in, and will be posted this morning. I'm going to tell you we have
never had a year where the vote was this close.
As of 7:30 NF time, 58 sites have reported in. I will update any last minute changes
before posting this later this morning. I also am going to investigate web casting
the results when I get into work, check the data page at http://www.stemnet.nf.ca/Groundhog/data.htm
for updates (refresh your browser).
Until later,
Bill
