Lloyd Axworthy Visits Earl Grey
Earl Grey had a thrilling visit by Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Lloyd Axworthy on Monday, January 18th. Mr. Axworthy enjoys taking the opportunity to speak with students whenever he has a free moment in his incredibly busy schedule. We were delighted to be chosen as a school that he would honour.
Mr. Axworthy came to present Mr. Lyn Madder with the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Teaching, representing Prime Minister Chretien. Commenting on the innovative work that Mr. Madder has done, Mr. Axworthy presented Mr. Madder with both a special certificate and a beautiful pen that had been used in the signing of a treaty banning land mines.
Mrs. Madder and the students of Room 28 were specially honoured by Mr. Axworthy for the unit they are doing on peace. He heard from them what they have been doing, and in turn, he talked to some of our students about the work he does as Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs. He told the students about the issue of land mines and challenged us to take up this and other humanitarian causes that would help make the world a safer place in which to live. It was indeed a privilege to have this visit.
