Diagnostic Learning Centre

Confidence as Learners

Our Purpose

We work in an intensive short-term academic program with students who lack confidence in themselves as learners.  Through specific praise, teaching strategies, and experience with success, we help students to see themselves as capable learners who can go on to learn other settings.

The Diagnostic Learning Centre is a  program in the Winnipeg School Division which teaches students literacy and organizational strategies to enhance classroom learning.

Specifically,

  • we offer an individualized program for students in Grades 3-6 within the North, Central and South Districts in the Winnipeg School Division

  • the program is offered in either English or French with a ratio of one Resource Teacher/Instructional Assistant team to three students

  • students attend the DLC program for 35 half days, spending the rest of each day in their home classrooms

  • we provide direct explicit instruction and specific praise to help students master these strategies

  • we help students reframe their image of themselves as learners

  • we set the stage (with home school, parents and students) so the student feels capable of continuing to learn independently in other settings

  • we provide a model for best practices for teachers.

We use reading and writing as the vehicles by which the students learn these strategies.  If these strategies are the appropriate ones for a student, if sufficient teaching is done and if learning occurs, then we should see positive gains in their reading and writing achievement.  We should also see students being more organized, more confident, and more willing to try unfamiliar tasks.
