It’s about the
story was a statement heard often during the digital storytelling
initiative, which brought sixty-four students and sixteen teachers from
across the Winnipeg School Division together as part of a unique
professional learning opportunity.
Teachers attended two
half-day sessions where they were introduced to the basic elements of the
digital storytelling program Photo Story 3 and the “seven elements of
digital storytelling”. The seven elements include point of view, dramatic
question, emotional content, voice, sound track, economy and pacing.

Armed with an
understanding of how the technology could enhance the art of storytelling,
teachers were given the task of creating a powerful 2-3 minute video of
their own. Teachers returned to their schools to share their learning with
students. Four groups of sixteen students and four teachers then arrived
at the technology lab to work on student created digital stories. During
each of the four days, problems arose and problems were solved, ideas were
discussed, encouraged and shared, students helped students teachers helped
teachers.
At
the end of each full day, participants came together for a “lessons
learned” session where we discussed what worked, what didn’t work, and any
ideas they may have to improve upon the process. The information gathered
is extremely valuable as we prepare for our next adventure in digital
storytelling.
I
am incredibly proud of each of the stories created by the students and
teachers involved in this initiative. Please join us in celebrating the
many voices of our community with each story told.
