School Support Worker

This position has been developed to aid the members of our community stay in contact with our school. The worker is available for the parents of our students to aid them in various endeavours, career information, resume writings, advocacy on their behalf or just to have a discussion over a cup of coffee. The worker is also responsible for organizing and informing our parents of upcoming events such as:

Heritage Language classes. We offer Cree and Ojibwe evening language classes fall of each school year. This is a Certificate of participation program and runs for 10 weeks.

Living A Good Life. (alternating years) is a free Certificate Program covering Aboriginal Culture, History & Spirituality and includes at a pipe ceremony and sweat. The program runs for 12 weeks and Students and Family Members are encouraged to attend program together.

PowWow and Drumming Group. To help and encourage students and family members learn about and participate in cultural activities while developing a school dance, drum and signing group(s) we offer an after school PowWow group along with regalia making.

Art Gallery Show. With our students participation student artwork is rotated in the displays throughout the school year, and in spring our Art Gallery Show provides the opportunity to promote positive student accomplishments, and instil community pride while providing positive role models for our younger community members. The next Gallery show is scheduled for April 2007.

Seasonal Feasts. We have four feasts throughout the school year honouring each season. A pipe ceremony is held at 11:00am and the feast starts at noon. Family and community members are encouraged to attend.

Cultural Days. Is part of our school curriculum and we encourage parents/families to participate in cultural days events and programs.

Parent gatherings. Several times throughout the school year we have an evening Parent gathering providing parents with the opportunity to meet and share information and a meal with the school administration.

Student/Parent field trips. Several times over the course of the school year parents are invited to join us on school field trips, which include medicine picking, sleigh rides and sweats.

Girls Program family days. Four times throughout the school year the Girls Program hosts a family day. The students choose the events and teachings and a lunch is provided.

Our School Support Worker can be found in our Community Room down the student support services hallway and is always happy to put on a pot of coffee or tea and have a visit.
