We suggest that you create the Olympic atmosphere in your classes and challenge the students to reach higher and go further than ever before using these Web Based Learning IT resources.  You could challenge them to create and make up a project using the following ideas. They can use any search engine descriptors. Or, you can provide a web quest guide - check the Web Quest page for assistance in design. Here are some questions for  fact finders, projects and quests.

  1. Where is Salt Lake and Utah located?  How far is it from Winnipeg.
  2. When are the games being held? What are the dates for a chosen sport and what is the venue?
  3. What is the name of the Olympic Stadium? What events will happen inside?
  4. Make a database for the events, venue and countries participating.
  5. Who are the three mascots for the games? What do they represent?
  6. What is the Olympic Athletes Village and what is everyday life in the Village like?  How will security be changed in the village this Olympics?  Are athletes in the public eye too much?
  7. How many athletes are expected to participate in the games?  Which countries do they represent?  How many participate from each country in each event?
  8. What is the most famous building in the host city?  What is the city famous for before the 2002 Olympic times?
  9. Compare and contrast the Winter Olympics of 1988 and 2002. What is different and what is the same about these Olympics and 1998?
  10. What is the Olympic Torch Relay?  Follow the path and map it.
  11. Predict the medal count for each country.  Do a class / school survey as part of this. After the Olympics, compare the results and find reasons for agreement or disagreement in the medal count.
  12. What part does visualization play in training and performance of an athlete and team for these games?
  13. Compare 2 countries in terms of how are sports psychologists an important part of athletic training?
  14. Choose a Canadian Team and 'report' on its activities and accomplishments.  Be a reporter and describe what you saw on television with the team and players.  Profile the team members in terms of events / abilities and Olympic outcomes.
  15. Prepare a bar chart showing medal count for all countries for 1998 and 2002.
  16. Reflect on your personal awareness of the Olympics and this Winter Olympics. What do you expect to find as you live through the Olympic experience this year? After, reflect on your experience this year and your growth in appreciation for the Olympics and specific sports preferences. You may wish to keep a diary for references. In addition, you can create a scrap book of newspaper articles and photos to support the diary / journal.

  Media Sites

Many Canadian Media web sites give biographic information by Sport and cross reference it with the individual athletes (Female and Male) or the Team and its' members. The biographies from the sites can be compared and compiled for your research objectives. These sites are great assets and fun to use. These sites give us the competition results in the ways we like to see on the internet compared to their unusual multi-media presentations. The Media web sites give current news and results. Remember that there is a 1 hour time difference and some TV are 'tape delayed' while the Internet is real time.

Compare sport and event information from the different sites to check for accuracy. For example, look at his from TSN on January 18.  What is the error?
