Literary and Cultural Appreciation Through a wide variety of reading, viewing and listening materials, students develop a sense of story and its structure and learn to identify the author's or illustrator's strategies. They have the opportunity to study genres from different cultures and to continuously make connections between the stories they are reading and their own lives. The Parent-Child Mother Goose rhyme program is incorporated into the primary story hour. All children from Nursery age up freely choose reading materials for recreational and study purposes that have been selected for their quality by the teacher-librarian. Students may check them out for one school cycle with the possibility of renewal. The Carpathia School elementary program aims to develop a love of reading and lifelong learning. Books to Share We encourage children to read daily with a parent, grandparent, sibling, neighbour or caregiver. This is beyond their school time reading expectations. The Books to Share cart contains a daily selection of books. (This program is in addition to the library book selections children make on a regular basis). Each child is allowed to take one book at a time from the cart. Books may be kept at home for a week. A discussion guide is included. Technology The school is equipped with a networked computer lab connecting 30 Dell computers, a scanner, colour printer, laser printer, large screen TV and a digital camera. The lab is open during school hours with classes rotating through on a predetermined schedule. Six Smart Boards enhance the curriculum on a rotational basis. Students learn skills to enhance the classroom curriculum. Computer applications are chosen according to the curriculum being addressed. Most of the applications are covered by the time the students finish Grade 6. Many applications are introduced in Grade 1 and continue right through to Grade 6.
