On January 30, 2007 Carpathia School held a Math
Create, Make and Take Night. Parents and children came to the school to create Math
activities they could take home to play.
Carpathia School offers a guided math program to the early years students twice per
cycle. This program encourages students to learn math skills in a fun atmosphere. Teachers
use specific activities to strengthen math skills for our students. As an extension to
this, the staff decided to host an evening for parents of all students to share these fun
activities with our families. This way families could not only practice math skills with
their children but parents could participate and understand how math is taught in school
today.
On January 30, 2007 families entered the gym to find 10 different Math stations run by Carpathia
School teachers. Five of the stations had the
activity ready to be played on a SMART Board. Each station had all the
materials laid out and instructions posted on the wall. Families were supported by the
teachers on how to create the activity and then how to play it. Families had fun moving
from one station to the next playing Math games with their children.
This evening was very well attended (98 people) and many positive comments by parents
were shared with the staff. Parents left the evening feeling much more knowledgeable about
the way Math is taught and learned in classrooms today.
