Student Meetings

Our Grade 1-6 UNESCO ASPnet leadership group meet in the beginning of the school  year. The students share their understanding of this world wide organization and the role they can play in promoting the UNESCO ideals. You will certainly be hearing their voices as they mobilize the school and the community to take action in helping those less fortunate than ourselves and in promoting a culture of peace both locally and globally. You might be interested to find out what the students discuss at their monthly meetings.

January 2008: The UNESCO team met for its first meeting of 2008 on Monday, January 14th.  At our meeting we were shown the many pennies and loose change we have collected for The Ladybug Foundation.  Mr. Udow showed us a video about Hannah Taylor, the founder of The Ladybug Foundation.
In the video Hannah explained how she became interested in homeless people and why she wanted to raise funds for the homeless. We also had an opportunity to learn about 5 of Hannah’s special friends who are also homeless.  Rick from Winnipeg, Kerry from Toronto, Brian who gave his Christmas present to a cold homeless person, Eileen from Victoria, and Layla, a 10 year old from Spain are all homeless people who were down on their luck.  We were pleased to learn that some of Hannah’s friends now have homes and are feeling better.  Thanks to Hannah’s kindness and caring her homeless friends began to believe in themselves.
Hannah also shared a lot of information about how we can help the homeless.  She also answered many questions about how she started the Ladybug foundation.
To learn more about Hannah, the Ladybug Foundation and her new book you may want to visit her web page at http://www.ladybugfoundation.ca/
To help Hannah raise funds for the homeless be sure to keep those pennies coming in.

February 2008:
Winnipeg Harvest is having its 8th annual Operation Donation food drive from March 3-7. There are many schools participating and so will Brock Corydon School.  Last year a lot of students from more then 70 schools collected over 34,000 pounds of non-perishable foods as part of the week event. If every student at Brock Corydon School brings in just one non-perishable food item we can help fight hunger in Winnipeg. The top ten most wanted list is:          Canned meat and fish     Canned soup     Cereal     Canned fruit and vegetables     Macaroni and cheese Canned stews     Dry pasta     Peanut butter     Baby food     Spaghetti sauce
If you can bring any of these food items to school, it would be much appreciated. Let’s fill the bins with food for Winnipeg Harvest.

Book Drive for Ramat Korazim: February was “I Love To Read” month?  In keeping with that theme Brock Corydon School is collecting English books to send to our sister school in Israel. When Morah Leah and Morah Ara went to Ramat Korazim, they noticed that the library at the school was bare. The students were very excited with the few books our teachers brought from Winnipeg.  Although those books were left at Ramat Korazim, we would like to help them build up their library! Please look at home for a gently used book that you have finished and enjoyed reading.  The book can be a picture book or a beginning chapter book.  If you don’t have a book at home that you are able to donate you can purchase a new one.  We are collecting the books until March 3.  All of the students will then write a special message in the cover of the book they brought to tell the Ramat Korazim students why they chose that particular book to donate. Our hope is that we will be sending over 200 books to fill their library!  Please help us with this great cause.  We are very fortunate to have so many English books at our fingertips here in Canada.
Thank you very much,
Sean, Yuval and Morah Ara

We are making a difference… D’arcy Bruning-Haid knew that we could make a difference!  She started this project with us called, “You can make a difference in the world”.  We came up with many ideas about what we could do.  We decided to carry out 2 projects.  On March 7, we will be going to sing at the Sharon Home.  We want to visit older people and make them happy by singing our favourite Shabbat songs with them.  We planned our performance to “make a difference” in their day. Our second project involved us collecting toys, books and games to give to the hospital for sick children.  We feel this is an important cause.  We want to put a smile on their faces and help make them feel better by having great things to play with. We are proud of both of our projects. Noa G., Alexander, Nicolas, Yakira, Noa S., Izzy and Saralin from the Gr. 2/3
