I LOVE TO READ
Reading Olympics

February was a very exciting month here at Tyndall Park School as it was “I Love To Read” month. Our theme for this year’s “I Love To Read” month was based on the Winter Olympics / Sports. Students were encouraged to read and learn as much as they could about different sports, the athletes and the countries the athletes participating in the Olympics came from.

I Love To Read” month started off with an opening “Olympic” assembly on February 1, 2006 where different classrooms represented the various countries participating in the Winter Olympics. Our official Olympic reading torch was lit by two of our students and stayed lit the entire month of the games.

During the month of February, students engaged in activities where they read and learned facts about the Olympics, and had guest readers visit their classroom. Also, as part of the festivities here at school, there was a Book Swap on February 16, 2006. Families donated books for the Book Swap. For every book donated, the children received a coupon ( up to a maximum of five) which entitled him / her to exchange for other donated books. The excess books were donated to the Winnipeg-Manila Sister Cities Literacy Exchange Program.

Students also participated in daily home reading.  By reading daily during the month of February, students read their way to earning a bronze, silver, or gold medal by meeting certain reading criteria. They also met a school goal of reading 6000 books. For reaching this goal, Mr. Stevenson will be doing Karaoke for all the students in March. Well done everyone and keep reading! Please continue to help nurture a love for reading with your child(ren) by: listening to your child read daily, sign the Home Reading slips and ensure your child returns his/ her book and slip on a daily basis, and ask your child questions on what they have just read.
