Pauline Clarke - Superintendent Of Schools

List of Inner City District Schools

The Inner City district serves a geographic area that spans from the Red/Assiniboine rivers near the Forks (Fort Rouge) to the south, up the Red River to Mountain (Machray) in the north, to Arlington in the west (King Edward, Wellington, General Wolfe) and south down Arlington to the Assiniboine River.  Our schools serve the downtown-area and part of the west end, the Point Douglas neighborhood, and the Selkirk Avenue/Salter street/Arlington neighborhood.

The Inner City District consists of twenty one schools which cover a range of configurations.

At the elementary level there are twelve Nursery - Grade 6 schools and three Nursery to Grade 8.  At the secondary level there are 2 junior high schools (7-9), a high school (7-12), a vocational school (9-12). an Aboriginal High School (9-12) and an Alternative High School (10-12).

Four of the schools in the Inner City District serve both the local neighborhood and the Division.  Niji Mahkwa (N-8) and Children of the Earth (Grades 9-12) offer the regular academic program in a setting which emphasizes Aboriginal languages and culture.  R. B. Russell (Grades 9-12) is a Vocational High School offering academic and vocational courses and Argyle Alternative High School (Grades 10-12) is a small alternative high school (up to 160 students) offering the regular academic program for students who might not be as successful or comfortable studying in a large high school.

The focus of the schools in the Inner City district is on the academic success of the students. A full range of programs is offered by dedicated staff in safe and productive learning environments. The schools serve children and families from many different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs who work together in a spirit of harmony and mutual respect.
