Russia

The population of Russia is 146,000,000.  People speak Russian. There are eleven time zones in this country so this is a real big country.   The first leader of Russia was Vladimir Iliac Lenin.   People from over 130 different ethnic groups live in Russia and speak different languages.  The currency, or money, is the ruble.

     The country is located in Asia where it has a real big land mass.  The oceans that border the country are the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Lena River, the Baltic Sea, and the black sea. The Capital city is Moscow and other major cities are St. Petersburg and Vladivostok.  Some of the Rivers in Russia are Volga River, the Ob River and Lake Baikal.  The lowest temperature is -7 degrees C.  They also have blizzards. Some famous landforms are the east Siberian Uplands, the Siberian Plains and Plateaus, and the Ural Mountains. 

The habitats found in Russia are mountains, tundra, grasslands and forests.   There are also bogs which are large areas of soft, wet land.   Some animals unique to Russia are the Snowy Owl, the Baikal Seal, the Siberian Tiger and the Musk Ox.  They have Zoos for                                                       endangered animals.

Russian  homes are made of wood, brick and concrete.  People wear sweaters, jeans, skirts, pants, shirts and blouses.  A decorative pin worn on their clothing is called a brooch.  They also buy the latest fashions.   Russians eat foods such as bread, meat, eggs, rice, and vegetables every day.   On special occasions they eat salads, soups, and pancakes. 

           

Up to the 19th century, people who were called serfs, worked on the land owned by a lord.   Today, the main jobs for the people that live there are farming, industry (the making if things using factories) and businesses. One of the most popular services that they have is McDonald’s.  Some products they manufacture are steel, chemicals, petroleum, boats and vehicles.    The transportation that they have are buses, street cars, and subways. One of the popular sports in Russia is hockey.  They also have zoos.

Russians have all sorts of schools like colleges, universities, plus elementary, and high schools.  The age of the children who go to school are from ages 6-17.  They go to school from September until May.  The times are 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  The subjects that they take are Science, Math, Literature, Geography, and Foreign Languages.  The popular sport in Russia is soccer.

            Special events that Russians celebrate are Easter, Christmas, New Years, and International Woman’s Day, Victory Day and Independence Day.  On special occasions they eat kutija (rice or cooked whole wheat mixed with walnuts, raisins and honey), goose, duck, ham, sweets, and drink tea.  Caviar is a delicacy taken from the fish called the sturgeon. 

 

Peter Tchaikovsky  is a well-known composer from Russia.   The Russians have many traditional folk songs. The Russian people play and listen to all different types of music.  Some famous buildings located in Russia are the Orthodox Church in Moscow.  A famous structure in Russia is St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, which has a tower that stands 33 metres tall.
