Mexico  

The country of Mexico started over 40,000 years ago. Hernan Cortes was a legendary adventurer who conquered the Mexican civilization. The Olmecs were the first civilization in Mexico.

The population of Mexico today is over 86,000,000. The main language in Mexico is Spanish, and Mexico’s main religion is Roman Catholic.  Mexico is a Federal republic with a president that is elected every six years. Mexico money or currency is the new peso and old pesos (1000) or centavos.

Mexico is located in the southern part of North America. It is bordered by the United States and The Gulf of Mexico. The capital city of Mexico is Mexico City. Other major cities are Monterrey and Guadalajara. Other areas are The Yucatan Peninsula, Popocatepetl, an active volcano, and Iztaccihautl which is a mountain from Mexican legends. Mexico gets a lot of rain, is very hot, and is a tropical country. Mexico is a combination of desert and tropical forests. Some of the unique animals are the butterflies and the gray whales. Gray whales are hunted for their blubber.   

 

The wealthy Mexican people live in apartments and large houses. Middle class Mexican people live in Colonial houses which are smaller.  The poorer people in Mexico live in small, poorly built houses called shanties.  Some jobs are farmers, fishing, doctors, scientists, and teachers. Cars and buses are the main types of transportation.  In Mexico there are also many small donkeys called burros which are used for transportation and for carrying large loads.  Common foods are fried beans, strong coffee, and clustered flan.  They buy things from a market place where there are many  small stands, where they can but things like tie-dyed fabric which is made by knotting the fabric before dying it.

Mexico has elementary schools, high schools and college. Children go to school from the ages of 6 to 16.  School starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.  80% of  Mexican people can read. A normal school day is approximately 6 hours.  Mexican people like to watch videos for entertainment.  In school children learn a traditional swords dance.

Famous landmarks include The Latin American Tower which is Mexico City’s tallest building, and the Barranca del Cobre or Cpooer Canyon.  The Angel of Independence which reminds Mexicans of their fight for freedom is located in Paseo Del la Reforma in Mexico City.  Some other amours buildings in this country are the Maya pyramids, Chichen Itza, an old city built by the Maya, and a Maya castle. A famous statue                                                        in the country is the statue of Mayan Gods.

The kind of arts and crafts that are specific to this country are Folk Art such as silver jewelry and terra cotta pottery, and Mural painting. The kinds of traditional music in Mexico are ‘Nortenos’ or ‘Rancheros’ musicians, and Mariachi bands. In their leisure time people sing, dance, and play sports such as Fuitbol, Beisbol, and Jaialaietc.

Paseo is another ceremony, which is still practiced in some small villages.  Unmarried girls parade clockwise around the plaza and the men walk counterclockwise around the plaza, and if they want to the boys can ask the girls to walk with them

Emiliano Zapata is a Mexican hero who represents the struggle for equality and dignity.   Bobby Avila was the first famous baseball player.
