Egypt
An Egyptologist is a person who studies
the language, history and culture of ancient Egypt.
Hieroglyphics was the original form of writing in ancient Egypt.
They used papyrus to write on and this was made from a tall water plant.
They believed in gods and goddesses and they have stories about them
which make them myths and legends. Some of the Egyptian gods and goddesses were
Iris, Osiris, Ra, and Anubis. They made mummies to show respect to the most
important people. The mummies were placed in a tomb and pyramids when finished.
In pyramids, they also put valuable treasures, often owned by the person in the
tomb. Cats were sacred in Egypt. They were
worshipped by
the Egyptians.

Today,
there are approximately 66 041 000 people living in Egypt. They
speak Arabic and Islam. Their major religion
is Islam. A tall slender tower from
which a crier calls people to prayer is called a minaret.

Egypt
is found on the continent of Africa in the northeast. The coordinates of Egypt are 30° N longitude, 30° E
latitude. The time zone in Egypt is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) + 1. The countries
that border Egypt are Libya and Sudan. The bodies of water that border Egypt are
The Red Sea and The Mediterranean Sea. There are valleys and river beds that
remain dry for most of the year except during the rainy season and they are
called wadi.
Cairo is the capital city of Egypt.
There are also other major cities in Egypt; they are Al Fayyum, Asyut, Luxor,
Aswan, and Alexandria. Some
important landforms in Egypt are the Nile River, Suez Canal, Lake Nasser,
Western Dessert, and Eastern Dessert.
An
area in the dessert where plants can grow because there is water is called an oasis. In the country the climate is hot and dry.
There is lots of sun, very little rain, and no snow.

The
homes Egyptians mostly live in are mud, brick or cement houses. Bricks are held
together by mortar. The kinds of schools Egypt has are university, high school,
and elementary. They have 210 school days in one year. The subjects they study
are English, History, Geography, Science, Arabic, and Math.

Egyptians
wear kinds of clothing that keep them cool. Men wear long skirts, while women
wear long dresses. The kinds of
food Egyptians eat everyday are rice, corn, onions, potatoes, dates, fish,
chicken, lama and beef. On special occasions the people of Egypt eat fuul
(stewed beans) and aysh which is bread. Egypt manufactures steel, iron, and
aluminum products. Egypt sells fabrics to make clothes and fine linen. The
people buy things from markets on the Egyptian streets.
The most popular sport the Egyptians play is soccer.
Special
holidays or celebrations that the Egyptians have are celebrations that celebrate
important people and special times such as the birthday of the Muslim prophet
Muhammad. One of the famous people that come from Egypt was Naguib Mahfouz who
was a novelist who won the Nobel Prize in 1988.
One of the parts of art that is specific to Egypt is Islamic Art. One kind of
traditional music they have is classical Arabic. In their leisure time, the
people dance. A famous entertainer from Egypt is Umm Kalthum.
