The country of China began 600 000 years ago The first leader of the Qin dynasty was Shi Huangdi. The population in China today is one billion people. They started to have one-child families because China was over populated. The language they speak in China is Chinese or Mandarin. There are 56 national groups in China. The kinds of government are communist government and democracy. They are an autonomous country, which means they are free from outside control.  At one point the government discouraged activities in China.  One of their main religions is Lama Buddhism, which combines the teachings of Buddah and the Dahli Lama.

China is located in the eastern side of Asia.  The bodies of water which border China, are The East China Sea, The Yellow Sea, The South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean.  A famous landform of this country is Mount Everest, which is in the southwestern region of China. The capital city is Beijing.  The other major cities are Hong Kong and Shanghai.  The two most important rivers are the Yangtze and the Yellow River.  The rivers deposit silt, a fine soil or clay carried by water and deposited on the land.  This creates fertile land for planting.  Three important mountains are Mount Everest, Kunlun Mountain and the great Himalayan Range. The climate of this country varies between 45°and -45° depending on the area of the country.

The homes people live in are caves, apartments, houses, and sampans. Some people carve homes in hillsides because they need shelter from the wind, and to protect them from floods.

Their main jobs are private businesses and artists. Some other main jobs in China are fishing, growing extra corps, and trading. One of the main jobs is Barefoot doctors. The doctors in China are called Barefoot doctors because they are qualified to treat minor medical problems.  Some products they manufacture are cement, textiles, TV, satellites and aircrafts.  They have free markets and private businesses. Transportation is bikes, trains, cars, trucks, and sailboats.

 

People in China go to school. They have nursery, elementary, middle, and university, which is the top of all classes.  They start at seven years of age. Children are at school for nine years, until they are at least 16 years old. They go to school everyday except for Sunday.  Children go to school from 8:30 in the morning until 4:30 in the afternoon.  For lunch they have a two-hour break                                                        and they have a 4-week summer break.                 Used with permission

The people that live in China like to play Champion crickets.  Other popular sports are Ping-Pong, basketball, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, and shadow boxing. Calligraphy, painting and delicate brushstrokes are arts specific to China. The family goes to the park at their leisure time. In China they have lots of opera.

China has many holidays and celebrations. Two very special celebrations are Liberation Day and Harvest Moon Festival. On special occasions such as the Harvest Moon Festival, they eat Harvest Moon cookies.  Meanwhile, they eat eels as an everyday meal.

        Some buildings in China are built in the pagoda style which is a type of building that looks like several one story buildings stacked one on top of another.  The famous buildings of this country are the Great Wall of China and the Beijing Great Wall Sheraton luxury hotel.  A famous structure is the Great Wall of China in the North Eastern area of China. The two most famous statues in China are the statue of Mao Zedong and Maitraya or Buddha.

Monkey, sheep and horses are animals found in China. The most unique animal is the panda.  Other animals are mice and oxen. The animals are also used for the horoscope. China has many zoos.
