Canada
Canada has one of the strongest economies in the world. Canada’s gross national product is the eighth largest. Canada is the world’s second largest producer of gold and the third largest producer of silver. In agriculture, Canada produces a great amount of barley, oats and wheat. Tourism is extremely important to the economy. Transportation facilities are excellent, especially in the larger cities such as Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, where the bus systems are highly developed. In other areas cars are the most common means of travel. Montreal has one of the cleanest and most efficient subway systems in the world. Each Canadian province is responsible for its own educational system. In all provinces, education is compulsory from ages 6 or 7 through age 15 or 16. Primary and secondary education is free. All Canadians belong to compulsory medical insurance plans, which are regulated by the provincial governments. Doctors and hospital care are excellent. Both spectator and participant sports are very popular. Favorites are hockey, speed and figure skating, football, baseball, soccer, rugby, curling, skiing, tennis, swimming, golf, lacrosse and field hockey. Nova Scotia is well known for dance festivals held in the summer.
