Alternative Energy Resources

Notice: This is a test version of the 2000 Web Based Learning Page. It contains working web sites from the data being tested and developed during real class time researching. Comments are welcome to Mr. Lambert

Group 1 - Web sites to check out

First, look at these Web Based Learning resources which contain the matrix for the topic Alternative Energy Resources.
Plan your work and work your plan. Select an AE Resource, describe it, identify the uses and value it offers over a current energy resource.

Energy Matters is created by students at ThinkQuest 2000. The Introduction page develops the problem and offers a solution. The History page is a timeline of events for energy - starting with energy from animals and fire and ending with the 1970's Oil Crisis and Energy Policies. The Physics page looks at energy as a closed system and looks at Kinetic and Potential Energy, Missing Mass and the Theory of Relativity, Vapor Pressure and the Physics of Definition of Energy.
The Types of Energy page includes a "Energy Crisis Game" along with information in the following classes:

  1. Fossil Fuels,
  2. Fission,
  3. Hydroelectric,
  4. Biomass,
  5. Solar,
  6. Wind,
  7. Geothermal, and
  8. Fussion
  9. Renewable

From the Rivendell Educational Archive there is Rivendell's Environmental Science Page and Rivendell's Energy Page.
Look at these 8 topics on the Energy Page:

  1. An Introduction to Sustainable Alternatives
  2. Solar Energy
  3. Wind Energy
  4. Biomas
  5. Geothermal Energy
  6. An Introduction to Fossil Fuels
  7. Oil and Natural Gas
  8. Conservation On a Individual Level

Alternative Energy Sources - produced by kids who made these Web Based learning pages in the Coolmine Community School, Dublin, Irleand, the topics below are easy to read:

  1. The Environment - think about it and 'progress'
  2. Intro to environmental problems caused by CO2 emissions
  3. Solar Energy
  4. Wave Energy
  5. Tidal Energy
  6. Hydro-electric Power
  7. Nuclear Energy

Do not use at this time - links need updating.
About Energy is from Alberta, CA. They have an extensive biography with publisher links. The web pages connection include the following:

  1. Solar
  2. Wind
  3. Hydro
  4. Geothermal
  5. Battery
  6. Kyoto
  7. What Can You Do?

List of Energy Fact Sheets - published by The Energy Educators of Ontario has Renewable Energy Sources links to

  1. Hydro Electric Power,
  2. Ocean Energy Systems,
  3. Tidal Energy,
  4. Cogeneration,
  5. Photovoltaic Cells
  6. Passive Solar Energy

Intro to alternative energy sources is a course from UCCS Edu. Notice the requirements for Grading and Assignments. The web page links to a Periodical Table web page and the latest printable Periodical Table and Fundamental Physical Constants.

WTEA's Power & Energy Resources for Technology Education has valuable links that include Wind Energy Resources, Mr. Solar, The Effects of Solar Energy - 3 lab activities to learn how solar energy is absorbed and used in life. It is part of a collection of almost 200 single concept lessons that may be freely copied and used in a classroom. The Energy Story has 15 chapters for further reading - check it out. Solar Now has a 'Kids Corner' with a Glossary of Renewable Energy Terms, "What stores Solar energy best?" and "Make a Pizza-box solar oven" and a good Links Page. The Anemometer page lets you make a vertical-axis wind conductor and measure velocity.

Matilda - Solar Power Page of links check out some of the 'down under' Aussie links.

The link Renewable Energy Research is designed to harness South Africa's natural energy resources for its people.

The Energy Book webpage has links to the Wind Power guide Page, its own links page that has a free wind power calculator. The Centre for Alternative Techology (CAT) is based in UK and you can take a virtual tour.

Need to tell the time? Try the Universal Pocket Sundial and see how to use it Ther are other links take you to The American Sundial Association; Sundials on the Internet is a UK site that get 1500 visitors a day and has extensive answers to your questions; Horology has a unique approachto clocks and time.

More Web Based Learning resources (not checked as of Oct. 24, 2000)

Solar Energy web page is has connections to Solar Thermal Energy.
This is part of the On-Line Renewable Energy Education Module from Solstice and CREST - the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology.

CREST has another interesting web page called GEM - the Global Energy Marketplace that in an on-line searchable database of 2500 energy efficiency and renewable energy annotated Web links. This database is sponsored be the EPA (US Envirnomental Protection Agency) that has an EPA Student Center and an EPA Teacher Education Center.

Alternative Energy and Renewable Energy Sources - Is there a Sustainable Solution for 6 billion Humans on the Planet? See the extra large topic list on this website.

Types of Solar Power Systems from "Natural Energy Systems" - good schematics for AC-DC conversion. This includes diagrams for Basic, Diode, DC, AC, Utility Intertie, and Hybrid systems.

"Clean energy 101" from National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the U.S. Department of Energy's lab., Golden, CO. Topics include Energy from the Sun, the Wind, Plants, Water and Energy from Earth's Heat. There is also solutions for consumers, kids, governments and businesses.

SRC - Saskatchewan Research Council is developing an optimum engine and fuel system for natural gas operation. See a photo of the car using natural gas.

1997 Directory of Efficiency and Alternative Energy Programs in Canada. The parent webpage is Canada Business Service Centres with a great flow chart for linking to all branches at the site. The search page links to all provinces and the Federal Government.

American Solar Energy Society has news, a Solar guide, conducts home tours and links to its' Solar Today magazine.

Julian's Page on Gas Turbine Engines starts with the introduction and has a link to The Jet Genesis (University of South Hampton, U.K.) that gives a good outline for the Jet Engine. This will let you see how current technology and fuel chambers work.

National Hydrogen Association has a good main page. Remember, we will not run out of Hydrogen. It has a link to other Hydrogen Web Sites, including the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Letter.

The Sunshine Coast Solar Systems gives information on 4 pages about purchasing a system - get to know its parts and equipment.
