Emily Howard Jennings Stowe

Dr. Emily Howard Jennings Stowe was born in the year 1831 on
May 1st. She was born in Norwich and died in Toronto on April 30,
1903. Emily was raised by her parents and grandfather. Her
mother's name was Hanniah Lossings, her father's name was Peter
Lossings. Emily's parents and grandfather always encouraged Emily
to follow her dreams, they were very supportive.
Emily followed her dreams and began to teach in Brandford
School and Mount Plezant. In the year 1854 she was hired to be a
principal of Brandford School. Later on Emily wanted to settle in
and start a family of her own. Then she meet a man named John
Stowe, he was very loving and very supportive towards Emily. So
Emily and John married in the year 1856 on November 22. Later,
Emily started a new family; she had two sons and a daughter named
Ann Augusts Stowe Gullen, when she became a very successful
women. A few years later Emily's husband, John Stowe, had an
illness called tuberculosis. Unfortunately he died. Emily had a
hard time getting over it, but she didn't give up so easy.
Her husband's death inspired her to practice medicine. In the
mid 1860's, medical schools would not admit women! Emily tried to
go to school to practice medicine, but no Canadian College
accepted her because of her gender. Emily then enrolled herself
at the New York Medicine College for Women. While she was there,
she struggled to enter herself in the medical profession. Emily
successfully graduated in 1867, then, they set up a practice in
Toronto. In 1870, William Thomas Aikins, president of the Toronto
Medical School opened a clinic especially for Emily and Jenny
Kidd Trout.
Emily was the first Canadian women to organize a suffrage
group in Canada. In 1876 she created the Toronto Women's Literary
Club. In 1883, Emily organized the Women's Medical College in
Toronto. She was the first president of the Dominion Women Enfranchisement Association.
In 1903, Emily Howard Jennings Stowe passed away. Emily was a
life long champion. She fought for women's rights and was proud
to be a women. For doing this, she became the first Canadian
women to be a physician. Emily Howard Jennings Stowe was very a
powerful women and never gave up on anything she struggled
through. She has achieved her goals and she earned them well.
Emily will always be a lifelong champion in our Canadian hearts.
