James Naismith
Born a Canadian, James
Naismith, was born in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. After finishing
school he taught at the YMCA training school which
is now called Springfield College in the U.S. James Naismith
invented the game basketball, what is now one of the most popular games next to soccer and football today.
Basketball began being played in the YMCA training school, the game went on
to the playgrounds, high schools, college and later, becoming
an Olympic sport.
James Naismith died at the age of 78. Through all of his achievements
and goals he was commemorated and they made an award using his name for top male
and female college basketball athletes. The great game of
basketball is being played all over the world, tall, short,
skinny, big, young, and old. One of
the reasons I chose to do my heritage project on Dr. James
Naismith was because he invented this game where little kids (and
older) have goals and dreams to play this sport professionally.
Therefore, basketball is one of our many favorite sports to play. James Naismith will be remembered by the basketball world, and
especially by his home land, Canada.
