This year the S1 classes traveled back in time to the days of the voyageurs and the fur trade when they spent the day at the Fort Whyte Centre. Fort Whyte staff organized the students into brigades who then traded their furs with the Aboriginal chief located in the local village. Unfortunately, we were unable to make this trip using the snowshoes our predecessors would have used, due to a distinct lack of snow available in December. However, the guides led us through a series of traditional voyageur games, showed us a genuine sod hut and a herd of bison to compensate for this disappointment. Maybe next year Mother Nature will cooperate with some snow!! |
