Transportation In the early history of Manitoba, transportation was a critical issue. The ability of the fur trade to thrive and grow depended on the ability of the traders to gather the furs from across a vast territory and send them back to Europe to a public eager for these goods. The fur traders found using a blend of Aboriginal means of transportation, (canoes) and European means of transportation, ( York boats), suited their needs best. Later, settlers started to move into the interior of the continent, and their belongings came with them in a form of transportation unique to the prairies, the Red River Cart.
