In the beginning of this novel Fanny and Mille were walking to school
together. Once they were inside they were seated and their new teacher,
Miss Thatcher, told them to write a letter telling her about what they
did during their summer break. The first thing they had to do was put
the date and the name of the place they live in, which was Famish Gut,
Newfoundland. The thought of writing Famish Gut everyday made Fanny feel
sick, because she would think of the word of her place, like Famish
means hungry and Gut means....... something Fanny didn’t want to think
about.
In the middle of this novel Fanny was thinking that if she could beat
Sarah at any sports, Sarah might stop calling her fatty. That hurts her
feelings. She would think someday she’ll stand up to Sarah and say to
her, "to stop calling me fatty". If she can stop Sarah from
calling her that nickname, maybe the other girls would stop calling her
fatty too! Fanny knew that she would be able to stop that name calling.
At the end of this novel Fanny’s mother read out loud what it said
on the newspaper. It said that Fanny’s father and grandfather saved
the sailors. The title was called "The Heroic Men Of Famish
Gut". After Fanny’s mother read the news to everyone, Fanny’s
grandfather told Fanny that he was thankful that she didn’t change the
name of their community. Now, Fanny understands why they called this
place "Famish Gut," and she thought it was a very good place
for such a nice place.
My favorite part in this novel is when Fanny found out her real name
is Frances Louise. Her mother showed Fanny the family bible. She showed
her where her real name was and when she got baptized. Fanny was so
excited to tell the girls her real name is Frances she ran right out the
door. Now Sarah does not have to call Fanny, Fatty. She can call her
Frances or Fran.
This is my favorite part because it’s a history about Fanny’s
real name. When Fanny was born her mother wanted to call her Louise but
their grandparents expected it to be Fanny. Fanny was a family name to
the Grace Family. The ones who were called Fanny in their family were
Fanny father’s sister, (who had died) her mother’s mom, and two of
her great-grandmothers. The story about Fanny being called Frances
Louise was when the minister said that Fanny is not the proper name, it’s
only a short form of Frances. Then before anyone could do anything, the
minister already baptized Fanny with the name Frances Louise. After that
the family just called her Fanny, even though her real name in Frances
Louise.
