SAND EXPERIMENT

PROBLEM:  What will happen if sand is mixed with water?

HYPOTHESIS:    The sand will sink to the bottom of the bowl

MATERIALS:        -100 ml of water

                           -2 clear containers

                           -measuring cup

                           -30 ml of sand

                           -stir stick 

PROCEDURE:

1) Put 100 ml of  water into bowl
2)Measure 30 ml of sand, observe appearance.
3) Add 100 ml of sand to 100 ml of water 

 

 4) Observe and record results repeat observations 5 minutes and 1 hour

BEFORE            

1. light brown

2. flaky

3. feels gritty

4. in clumps                    

AFTER BEING ADDED

 1. Sand is at the bottom

  2. darker brown

  3. bubbles

AFTER FIVE MINUTES  

Sand sank to the bottom of container, water is brown.

AFTER 24 HOURS

Sand at bottom of container, no sediment in water, water is clear.

Conclusion:

The sand is a physical change, after 24 hours the sand was again separated from the water at the bottom of the container.
