School Programs / Special Services
French Immersion Milieu Program N to Grade 8:
Being a milieu setting, the French Immersion Program is the only program that is offered
in our school. All subjects are taught in French except the English Language Arts which is
taught starting in grade 1. We put much emphasis on languages but we also have a strong
math and science program throughout the different grade levels.
Resource Program:
We have a resource team made up of a resource teacher and a number of teacher assistants
who work hard at helping students with reading either in French or in English and help is
also provided in mathématiques for students who need the help.
Physical Education Program:
The school offers a strong physical education program from grades 1 to 8. Students at the
grades 5 to 8 also have the opportunity to participate in different sports team from
soccer to baseball to volley ball and basketball. Track and Field and Cross Country are
also offered to the grades 7 and 8 students.
Guidance:
We have a guidance counselor who works with all our students. He teaches programs at the
primary level. He works with the C.G.C. team and together they conduct social skills
groups at different times during the year. He also works with the older children in
offering guidance, administering orientation-type tests, helping students with the
organization of their work and with homework activities and even on a one to one basis.
Motor Skills:
Early in the year, all our kindergarten children are tested by our physical education
teacher and children who need it, receive particular assistance by our general teacher
assistant. Assistance is extended to grade one students who are also in need of support.
Computer Program:
All children in the school have access to computers. We have computers in all classrooms
and all children at the grades 1 to 8 levels work in the computer lab on a regular basis.
Music Program:
Our school offers a good music program. All classrooms at the grade 1 to grade 8 levels
receive set periods of music during the cycle. Added to this, the music teacher has a
primary choir and an intermediate choir. Throughout the year, the choirs participate in
outings during the Christmas period and they also take part in the Music Festival. Every
year, either the primary levels or the middle school participate in a production for the
parents. Music plays an important role in these productions.
Parent Volunteer Program:
Every year, parents are invited to come and volunteer their services at the school. Jobs
include working in the library, assisting teachers in the classrooms, helping out in the
resource program, going out on field trips etc... At the beginning of each year, a letter
goes home requesting volunteers. That is the time when you could sign up.
Parent Information Sessions:
Every two years or so, we survey the parents as to what types of information sessions they
would like to receive throughout the year. We have offered sessions on reading, on the
grade 3 provincial math test, on attention deficit disorder, on parenting skills on the
value of learning a second language etc... They are usually well attended.
ESL Integrated Program:
In our school population there is a mixture of different ethnic groups. A good number of
our students speak a language other than English or French at home. At the grade 1 2 3
levels, teachers receive much assistance from the resource team so that children have a
chance to practice their English. They usually have no problems in French because our day
is spent using the French language.
Early Identification Program:
This program runs division wide and it is the type of program where the school appraises
individual childrens development, be it academic or social-behavioural, from the
beginning of school entrance and it continues throughout the primary grades. The division
strongly believes that the earlier the specific needs of a child can be identified and
appropriate services and programs can be implemented, the greater the opportunity for the
child to function well. If and when difficulties are identified, the parents are then
alerted and with them, plans can be made.
Home Reading:
Our school strongly believes in the power of reading. We ask all students to read every
night. Children, especially at the primary levels, are provided with a book every night.
They are to read the book with an adult. The children bring the book back to school and
they can take another book out to read. Basically, they can read one book per night if
they are at the primary levels. It would take longer for the older students to read
chapter books. The resource teacher also runs his own home reading program. It is great
when parents assist children with the home reading program.
Parent Council
Every year, at our Meet the Teacher Night, in late September, parents have their annual
general meeting where a new Parent Council comes into being. Then, this Parent Council
meets once a month in the school staff room. Members of the Parent Council work with the
school on ideas that will help the functioning of the school. All parents are welcome to
attend the meetings. An added responsibility for the Council is to oversee the school
lunch program.
Noon Hour Activities:
Students at the grades 5 to 8 levels have the opportunity to be part of the choir, play 3
on 3 basketball, be part of a floor hockey team, or participate in a study session. Grade
6 students can come and work in the computer laboratory. Younger children get to play
outdoors.
Active Sports Programs at the grades 5 to 8 levels:
All students who enjoy team sports have the opportunity to join in to play soccer, volley
ball, basketball and baseball . They can also try out in track and field and cross country
running.
Lions Quest, Second Step, Personal Safety, Street Proofing:
Starting in kindergarten, children are taught how to respond to strangers and
they are taught impulse control, how to empathize with other children and how to deal with
anger. Older children receive guidance through the program Lions quest.
School Patrols:
Our school patrols are out on duty each day at 8:15 a.m., 11:20 a.m., 12:20 a.m., and
2:55p.m. Patrols are there to help all children cross the street safely. We ask parents
not to send children before patrols go on duty. Students at the school are expected to
comply at all times and to lodge complaints with the patrol supervisor.
Lunch Program:
Many of our children come to school on the school bus so they have no choice but to stay
at school for lunch. Like all schools in the division, we have a parent-run lunch program.
Every child attending the lunch program must be registered with the school lunch
coordinator. At the beginning of each school year, the lunch coordinator sends out
registration forms for parents/guardians to fill in and return to the school. At any other
time during the year, registration forms can be picked up at the school office. All
children bring their own lunches. The parents monthly fees go towards paying the
parents who supervise the children during the lunch hour. Children can buy small milk
containers for 10 cents a container. Food that children bring from home can also be heated
up in the microwave ovens.
