Have you thought of giving your child the gift of another language?

Who is immersion for?

Early immersion is a program of choice, open to all children of the appropriate age.

While most French immersion students are from English-speaking homes, a growing number come from homes where neither English nor French is the primary language.  These students are learning English and French as their second and third or even fourth and fifth languages.

               Knowing a second language can:

bulletincrease your child's personal pleasures such as the enjoyment of literature, art, music, theatre, travel and personal relationships
bulletincrease your child's understanding of and respect for other nations and other cultures
bullethelp your child to understand more about himself, his country and his fellow Canadians
bulletgive your child access to a larger pool of information and to more educational and career opportunities
bulletgive your child a competitive edge in the job market anywhere in Canada and in many other countries.

The process of learning a second language
can also:

bulletdevelop your child's listening and learning skills as well as the self-discipline that are useful throughout life
bulletincrease cognitive ability creating a more flexible thinker
bulletenhance his knowledge of his first language and improve his ability to communicate in it
bulletmake learning a third or fourth language much easier

How do I prepare my child for immersion?

The best advice we can give when enrolling your child in an early French immersion program is to prepare him for school just as you would if he were entering the English stream from ensuring that he can manage his own jacket and shoes to making him comfortable spending time away from you. Anything you can do to familiarize him with the school, the playground, the teacher, future classmates, the route to and from school and the routine he'll follow in the fall will make the transition that much smoother.

Most if not all of the children in his class will have no prior knowledge of French so don't feel it's necessary to put him in a French preschool or daycare.  On the other hand, it is a good idea to expose him to a little French beforehand so that he can enjoy some   familiarity with the sound of the language: a French cartoon on the TV, a segment of  Sesame Street, some children's French songs.
