Katchina and the Bear
One summer night Katchina followed her brother, the
bear, up the steep slope. Katchina and her mother had disgraced their
tribe and in punishment their grandfather, the chief of their tribe, had
turned her brother, Bull Foot into a bear and cast their family out of
the tribe. Their mother died of the flu a month later, so they had gone
in search of the sacred tipi, the home of the sun, to ask for food and
shelter.
