How the Platypus Got Its Beak

Once long ago, when the world was young, there was a species of animal that was like a beaver crossed with a fish. It was the platypus, a brown furred animal with webbed feet. One of the young platypuses was named Ducky. The other kids would tease him for his name. One day Ducky had had enough, so Ducky decided that he would live up to his name, and be unique. Ducky went and prayed to the great spirit Manitou. "Please Great Spirit, I want to live up to my name! Give me something to make me unique!" Manitou felt pity for Ducky, so he gave him a duck’s beak. "Now I’m unique, and no one can tease me for my name!" When the other young platypuses saw Ducky, they started lo laugh at him. Manitou saw this and was so enraged he decided to give all the kids beaks. When they got older, all their kids had beaks. So, up to today, all the platypuses have been born with beaks.
