How Rain Came To Be

BY: Sasha

A long time ago there was a village. It was a good village, but sometimes it was a bad village. One day the chief got so mad he made it rain. Since the people had never seen rain, they thought it wouldn’t harm them. When the rain didn’t stop the tribe sent four hunters to talk to the chief. They asked him to stop the rain. The chief told them that they had to bring him the sacred staff from off the top of the mountain. Then the chief told the four hunters that they had to work together to get the staff. The chief gave Big Crow, Little Sky, Little Fish, and Big Wolf a map to the mountain. He then told the four hunters to leave tomorrow. The four hunters asked what would happen to their wives and children. The chief told them that their wives and children would stay with him. The next day the four hunters set out to look for the staff. They didn’t get far when they ran into an old man. He asked the four hunters to bring him some food. Three of the hunters said, “Yes”, but Big Wolf said, “No.” So the old man put a curse on Big Wolf. A day later Big Wolf collapsed on the ground and got very sick. The only way to cure him was to get an herb. The three hunters got the herb and they crushed the herb and made Big Wolf drink the water with the herb in it. The next day, Big Wolf was better so the four hunters started walking again. The four hunters didn’t have enough food so they sent Big Crow to get them food. He brought back four ducks and water. The four hunters still had to share food because there still wasn’t enough food. The hunters kept walking until they reached the plains. They set up a camp and started to hunt the buffalo. When the hunters finished hunting they brought back only four buffalo. The hunters agreed to stay on the plains for a few days. After four days the hunters were on the move again. A couple days later, Big Crow, Little Sky, Little Fish, and Big Wolf made it to the base of the mountain. The hunters started to climb the mountain. It took four days and four nights to get to the top of the mountain. When Big Crow, Little Sky, Little Fish, and Big Wolf got to the top of the mountain and took the staff. When the four hunters got down from the mountain they started to walk to their camp. It took nine days to get back to their camp. They returned home and found the chief. The four hunters asked where their wives and children were. The chief told them that he gave them to another tribe. The four men got so mad they killed the chief and destroyed the staff. The hunters looked at their village. The rain had stopped. The hunters then went looking for their families. When they reached the camp again, their wives and children were there. The hunters asked their children what happened. The children told their parents that the chief gave them to another tribe. The children and wives were put to work for days. On one day it started to rain and the other tribe thought we were the cause of the rain so they brought the children and wives back to their village.

The spirit of the chief still lives and when he is mad he makes it rain.

The End
