How The North Pole Got So Cold And Snowy

By: Micah

Very, very far away, in a place, which is now the North Pole, there was a hunting party. This hunting party was out hunting for four days and four nights, when they returned to their village. Their village was empty. All that was left were three dogs. The hunters were very puzzled and after about ten minutes, they decided they would go searching for their families. They searched for days and days, but found nothing. One day they found an old ruin and on the steps of the ruin. The old man said, “If you ever want to see your families again you will give me four magic stones.” One of the hunters asked, “Why do we have to go and find four magic stones?” The old man said, “Come back here when you have the stones and I will tell you more.” The men thought that was fair and they set out to the four corner of the earth.

The first place the hunters went was to Mount Doom. They thought the firestone might be one of the magic stones. They tried to find the entrance to the mountain, but they couldn’t find it. As they searched for many hours and finally they found it. As they entered the mountain it got hotter and hotter. Suddenly they heard, “Grrr!” an evil Buffalo appeared out of nowhere. The men armed their bows and fired their arrows, but they had no affect on Buffalo. The men tried firing again and again. Finally, Buffalo was dead. They moved on to the chamber of the firestone. They opened the door and spears came flying out of the walls. “AHHH! Let’s get out of here”, one of the men cried. They all ran out of the mountain, all except for one of the men. He dodged the arrows and grabbed the stone. Suddenly, the ceiling and the walls began to collapse. He started running and made it out of the cave alive. The hunters were relieved and they continued on their journey.

The men walked for two days and came to Crystal Lake, which was believed to have a Water Goddess living in the water. The men got out their spears, held their breath and swam to an underwater chamber. There they found no sign of the Water Goddess or any traps. They walked towards the stone and grabbed it. Suddenly, the water appeared and began to attack the men .The men started swimming really fast. While swimming, one of the men dropped the firestone and the Goddess began to dry up the lake. It turns out that you can use the stones against other Gods and Goddess. One of the men picked up the stone, and all the men swam to the surface. Once again, the men started walking. In about three hours, the men came to a clearing of berries. The men finished eating by nightfall. They all started walking with only the moon and stars to light their way. Then they came to a fox and he said, “Go ten miles down the hill and you will find the White Buffalo’s lair. But, I warn you, he has traps and demons that walk his ground.”

The men started walking. Then about a half hour later, they found the White Buffalo’s lair. Right behind the lair was a shrine that held the stone in it. The men got closer and closer, then the White Buffalo came out of his lair for his evening snack. He found the men sneaking up to his shrine. He said to him self, “It’s dinner time!” He charges at the men, but he falls into one of his own traps. Buffalo falls on some spears and dies, at least his body dies, but his spirit is still trying to kill the men. One of the men takes out the firestone and the water stone, and the White Buffalo’s spirit disappears. Just then the demons attack, but one of the men has avoided all the demons and traps. The other men are already up on the hill firing arrows so the man won’t be hurt. When the lone man gets to the top of the hill, the men continue on their journey. They think the ice stone is in the coldest part of the land, on the ice mountain. The men walk for about two and a half days, as it colder and colder. Once they are at the mountain, the men walk into the mountain. Once they are in the mountain, they hear a voice saying, “Who is it that disturbs my slumber?” “It is I”, said one of the men. “The person who seeks the ice stone.” The Ice God pauses, and the men walk into the mountain. Once they are in the mountain, the men slide on the ice till they find the ice stone.

As soon as one of the men touches the ice stone, icicles fall from the ceiling onto one of the men. After the icicles fall, the men get up and grab the ice stone and run. They can see the entrance, and are almost there when the Ice God appears and begins throwing icicles at the men. One of the men points the firestone at the Ice God, and he begins to melt. The men run out of the mountain and are safe at last. They head for the ruins and the old man. The old man says, “Give me the stones and I will give your families their freedom.” One of the men asked, “Why did you kidnap our families in the first place?” The old man said, “Long ago, your ancestors stole the land from my family, so I wanted to get revenge on your tribe.”

The old man put the stones into the pot and the stones were transformed into a magical pipe. In the pipe smoke, the men saw a glimpse of their families. The old man took the pipe out of the pot and held it up into the air, and said, “O Great Spirit please take this pipe as a gift and please destroy these men.” The Great Spirit hold out his hand, but one of the men jumps up and grabs the pipe. He begins running, but as he is running, the smoke from the pipe begins to disappear. Seconds later, the men’s families are sitting on the steps of the ruin. The men are so happy to see their families that they jump for joy. The elder of the tribe said to the old man, “ You must be punished for kidnapping these families.” The elder raised his staff and chanted a song, and the old man disappeared. But before the old man died, he cast a spell on the land, the land would be covered with snow and get very, very cold. Seconds later, it began to snow. The people returned to their village and had a great feast. There was music, dancing, lots of food, and crafts for the children. The people also had to make lots of parkas out of animal fur and collect more food. But they did not think that would be too hard. So that is how the North Pole came to be so cold and snowy.
