Earth, Sun and Moon

By: Matthew P.

A long time ago, deep in the forest by the river, was a village. The village was a happy place. Until one day three brothers came into the village. The brothers were named Earth, Sun, and Moon. They acted oddly and had strange rituals. The villagers held a council meeting about the brothers. They all thought that the brothers should leave the village. Except one. The chief said “These men are strange to us, but they are good people. Let them travel up the mountain to the Temple of Truth. It will change them, if they make it up to the top.” So the next day the chief told the brothers about their decision. “You must travel up the mountain to the Temple of Truth. There you will find the truth. Always take the right path. You may go now.” So off they went. The brothers canoed for four days and four nights. Then they finally reached the base of the mountain. “It’s huge!” said Sun. “It’s tall!” said Earth. “It’s green!” said Moon. They all looked up. The mountain had forests all over it. “We have four days worth of food.” said Sun. “We must make it up the mountain in four days or we will run out of food.” On the first day up the mountain, as they were walking down the path, they came across a fork in the road. “Which way do we go?” wondered Earth. “What did the chief say before we left?” asked Sun. “He said that we should always take the right path.” said Moon. “But what did he mean?” Just then, a monkey appeared, sitting on a rock by the path. “Follow me.” said the monkey. “Along the left path lies a village of your wildest dreams.” “But how can we trust you.” asked Earth. “We have just met.” “Trust me, friends.” said the monkey. “You will like what you see.” The brothers discussed it. “I think that we should follow him.” said Moon. “I don’t think that we should.” said Earth. “I don’t think that is the right path.” They all looked at the paths. The monkey was on the left path. “As the chief said, we should follow the right path.” said Sun. So they turned to the monkey and said, “We would rather take the right path, but thank you.” so they walked on. When they looked back and the monkey was gone. They walked until it got dark. “Maybe we’ll see the monkey again.” said Sun. They ate supper and then went to bed. The next day they started early and walked for several hours. They later stopped and ate lunch. As they were eating they noticed a bird on the ground just off the path so they went to check it out. “It’s very badly hurt. We should help it.” said Sun. “I’ll get some supplies.” said Moon. They fixed up the bird and it said to them “Thank you for saving me. I’ll grant you one wish if you like.” The brothers discussed it. “What should we wish for?” said Moon. “I’m not sure.” said Earth. “I don’t think that we need anything.” said Sun to the bird. Stunned, Moon and Earth stared at their brother, wondering why he had just said that. “We did it because you were in need of help.” said Sun to the bird. The bird nodded and said “If that is your choice, then so be it.” and flew off. “Why did you do that!?” said Moon. “We could have wished ourselves off this stupid mountain and back in another village.” “Or the kings of the world!” said Earth “But no matter.” he added, and they kept on walking. They walked for several more hours, stopped for supper and went to sleep. Then they awoke they ate breakfast and started out early. They walked on until around noon. They stopped for lunch. As they were eating, an old man came hobbling over. “Could you please spare some food?” he asked. “I am on my way down the mountain and have no food.” The brothers looked at him. “I will give you all my food.” said Earth. “I will give you a portion of my food.” said Sun. They all looked at Moon. He shook his head and said “I will not give you any of my food, you old man.” The man looked at them and said “Thank you for all the food you have given me.” and walked off down the other path. They then traveled onward. Later, they stopped for supper. They then went to bed. In the morning, when they got up, they looked in their bags. “There is one more days worth of food in our bags.” said Sun. “We must reach the temple today.” and off they went. They walked until lunch. They ate and then kept on walking. Finally, after hours of walking, they saw the temple gates. They started to walk faster and faster. They noticed that they were running. The gates opened when they got there, as if awaiting their arrival. “I can’t believe that we’re finally here!” said Sun. They walked into the main corridor of the large temple, only to be greeted by the chief of the village himself. “I have been expecting you.” he said, “Come, sit down.” They went over to four chairs sitting in a small corner. They all sat down and talked. “Do you know what I meant when I said to follow the right path?” he asked them. “I think that you meant that we should take the right path on the road.” said Moon. “I think that you meant that we should do what is right.” said Earth. “I think that you meant that we should follow our hearts and do what we think is the right thing to do.” said Sun. “You are all right, all of you.” said the chief, “I will now let you live in the village if you like.” “I was the old man, the bird and the monkey.” he said. They all looked at him strangely. “There is very powerful magic in this temple. I have learned only some of its many ways.” Then he muttered a strange incantation and said, “You may now watch over our village for eternity.” and with that they turned into what is know as our Earth, Sun and Moon.
