How The Wolf Became Grey

BY: David

Once a long time ago all the wolves in the world were black and no animals had respect for them. But one wolf wanted respect, and his name was Yellowteeth. His father went over the four great mountains but never returned. So Yellow teeth decide to go on a quest to find his father and respect for all wolves. After walking for a bit Yellowteeth came to the first great mountain. “That’s a big mountain”, said Yellowteeth. So he started to climb up the mountain. He was only up about a quarter of the way up when the moon came out. Yellowteeth found a ledge to sleep on for the night. When he woke up, there was a huge bear standing over him. The bear said, “No wolves are allowed up here”. Yellowteeth nodded and began to walk down. “Wait bears don’t own this mountain, the mountain goats do,” said Yellowteeth. “No”, said the bear “Yes”, said Yellowteeth.“Why are you on the mountain?” asked Yellowteeth. The bear did not reply. Yellowteeth left the bear and continued up the mountain until he came across a mountain goat village.

Yellowteeth tried to go around the village so the goats of the village could not see him.But a goat, which looked pretty young, yelled, “Wolf!” Yellowteeth jumped and landed on the goat and bit him. The goat became unconscious. Yellowteeth dragged the goat away from the village. Yellowteeth did not know want to do. Should he eat the goat or wait until he woke up and then decide what to do with him. When the goat woke up, he was frightened. Then when the goat saw Yellowteeth he was still frightened. “I will give you a choice”, said Yellowteeth, trying to sound mad.“What are my choices?” asked the goat.“I eat you, or you travel with me and be my servant”, said Yellowteeth.“I will be your servant”, said the goat.“I am Yellowteeth,” said Yellowteeth.“ I am Hoof ”, said Hoof.“I am looking for my father”, said Yellowteeth.“So that’s why you are going over the four mountains,” said Hoff.So the two started walking up until they reached the top of the first mountain by nightfall. But they did not stop, they started going down the mountain. Then Yellowteeth lost his grip and slid all the way down. He finally hit a rock and flew through the air until he landed at the bottom of the mountain. He landed on his back. Then that same bear came and dragged the unconscious Yellowteeth into the forest. Then Hoof came collapsing down the mountain. “Yellowteeth!” shouted Hoof.

When Yellowteeth woke up the bear was standing over him.“Are you okay?” asked the bear.“I just saw you slide all the way down on your feet” said the bear.“Ouch!” replied Yellowteeth. “I can take you to the next mountain”, said the Bear. “Sure”, said Yellowteeth. “Oh”, replied the Bear, “I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Drizz.” So Drizz threw Yellowteeth onto his back and started carrying him up the second mountain.

“Where is Yellowteeth?” said Hoof to himself. “I will go and see if I can meet him on the second mountain.” So Hoof started galloping up the second mountain.

“Halt! You cannot go through the village of Damenor”, said a guard. “Why not?” asked Drizz. “Because you are not a mountain goat”, said the guard. “There is another way across. You must take the narrow path. If you fall, you may die.” Drizz scratched the guard in the face and walked into the village. All the village mountain goats were looking at them. “Don’t mind us”, said Drizz, still carrying Yellowteeth on his back. As nightfall came, Drizz was looking for a place for them to sleep. Drizz found an empty cave, where they slept for the night. Yellowteeth was feeling better the next morning. He could walk by himself. They started walking down the mountain slowly and steadily, until they reached the bottom. “Hoof”, said Yellowteeth. Hoof was waiting for them at the bottom of the mountain, said “Who is this?” “This Drizz”, said Yellowteeth. “He is helping me.” So on they walked. There was a huge field in between the second and third mountain. They had to walk through the cornfields, bean fields, and a field of squash. It started to rain. Drizz’s leg brushed up against something. It was a squirrel. “I’m sorry”, said Drizz. “That’s ok”, said the squirrel. “I was on my way to see the great elder.” “What great elder?” asked Yellowteeth. “The one who is just in the forest”, said the squirrel. “I can take you to her if you like.” “Ok”, said everyone. So the squirrel took them to a hut not far away. The hut looked old and discarded. The squirrel then opened the door. At that moment, bars made of wood came falling down over top of all three of them.

“He He He “, cackled the squirrel. “What’s so funny?” yelled Yellowteeth. “There is no elder. I tricked you into coming here. I work for KingGolden Horn, who lives on the fourth and fifth mountains”, said squirrel in an odd voice. Hoof grimaced. “King Golden Horn would never capture his own kind”, said Hoof. “Oh he might if they were traitors”, said squirrel. “I’m not a traitor!” yelled Hoof. “Yes you are. You are traveling with a wolf and a bear”, cackled the squirrel. “Enjoy your cage!” The squirrel walked away chuckling and laughing to himself. Then he ran into the deer. “What have you done now Squirrel?” asked the deer named Ler. “Oh, oh, I must go find the ones you have tricked.” Calmly the deer went into the woods to find Yellowteeth, Hoof, and Drizz.

“How are we going to get out of here?” asked Yellowteeth. “I know how”, said Drizz. Then right before their eyes Drizz transformed into a mouse and crawled right through the cage. He then turned back and said to thebear, “I am a transform.” “You are a …”, shouted Yellowteeth. “He is a transform. They can transform into anything. No one knows what the real form of a transform is”, whispered Hoof. Then Drizz transformed into a beaver and started gnawing on the wood bars. At this time the deer named Ler arrived. “I am very sorry for the squirrel’s actions”, said Ler. “Yea, that is great and everything, but who are you?” asked Yellowteeth. “I am Ler, Queen of the Forest”, said Ler. “How did you get out of the trap Beaver?” “I gnawed right through the wood”, said Drizz, still in the form of a beaver. “Oh, I am sorry. I did not ask your name”, said Ler. “I am Yellowteeth”, said Yellowteeth. Drizz, the beaver and Hoof introduced themselves to Ler. Ler stayed and talked to everyone, as Drizz had to gnaw through the wood. Finally, Yellowteeth and Hoof were free. “Can I ever repay you three for your trouble?” asked Ler. “You can travel with us and help me find my father. He traveled over the four great mountains, but never returned”, said Yellowteeth in a low voice. “Yes I will go with you”, said Ler. They did not know that squirrel was listening to the Queen speak. So squirrel started thinking of a new trick to pull on the four travelers. Nightfall came, but squirrel did not sleep, unlike the Yellowteeth and his group. He started to climb until he was pretty high up. He then slept for the rest of the night.

When Yellowteeth and the others woke up, they started for the third mountain. When they reached the third mountain, they began to climb up until they met some guards. “Who are you?” asked the guards. “I am Ler, Queen of the Forest and these are my subjects”, said Ler. “Play along”, she whispered to the other three. “Why is a mountain goat your subject?” said the guard. “I don’t… run for it!” yelled Yellowteeth. They traveled right into the village. Everyone in the village looked at them. The guards arrived at the same time Drizz used her transtorm power. Drizz transformed herself into a giant hawk and flew to the end of the third mountain. “You are a transtorm?” asked Ler. “Yes”, said Drizz, who had now transformed into a deer. “Have you seen a deer, a wolf, a mountain goat, and a bear go by?” asked squirrel. “Yes, no wait, there was no bear. There was a beaver”, said the guard. Squirrel shrugged his shoulders and then tried to walk through the village. “You think you can just walk through this village”, said the guard. “Well, then how am I going to get to the fourth mountain? Hey, look at that”, pointed the squirrel. With the guard distracted, he ran as fast as he could, until he came to the end of the village. Then he ran all the way down the mountain. He then met up with an Eagle. “May I have a ride to the fourth mountain?” asked the squirrel. “What is in it for me?” asked the Eagle. “Some tasty mice”, said the squirrel. “Where are these tasty mice?” asked the Eagle. “On the fourth mountain”, said the squirrel. Squirrel jumped on the Eagle’s back and they flew to the fourth mountain. There were no mice on the fourth mountain.

“I am very tired of climbing”, said Drizz in his bear form. “Ya! Me too”, said everyone else. “I am a mountain goat, I love to climb.” So they kept climbing until they came to King Golden Horn’s castle. “Come on guys, let’s keep on climbing”, said Hoof. “Where do you think you are going?” asked a low voice. “We are climbing to the top and down the other side of this mountain. Do you mind?” asked Yellowteeth sarcastically. “Yes I do!” said the voice. When the four travelers turned around, there was a mountain goat with golden horns, with what looked like an army behind him

“Oh you must be King Golden Horn”, said Ler. “I am Ler, Queen of the Forest.” “I don’t know who you are, but you have been causing trouble on the fourth mountain and you have kidnapped my favourite mountain goat. For that you will have to pay! Attack!” said King Golden Horn. They came charging straight for them. Drizz tried very hard to get rid of them by using his claws. A big group of the army started running after Hoof. Hoof lost his balance and fell on the mountain. None of them attacked Yellowteeth. King Golden Horn came charging at Yellowteeth. King Golden Horn hit him and Yellowteeth soared into the air and landed on the edge of the mountain, sliding all the way down the mountain. When he woke up there was Hoof laying beside him. It sounded like the battle was over. A dark figure appeared and started to drag him, but he was unconscious once again. When he awoke, Yellowteeth was beside Drizz. “You ok?” asked Drizz.

“I wiilbe”, said Yellowteeth quietly. “What happened?” “Well, right after you fell, the squirrel came out of nowhere and created a rockslide. I think this killed everybody. I transformed into an Eagle and flew away to see if you and hoof were ok, but I was too low and I fell straight into the ground. I was unconscious”, said Drizz. “When I found the two of you still alive, I dragged you to my home and have helped you”, said the voice. “Ya, that’s fine, but who are you?” asked Yellowteeth. “Well, I am your father.” This made Yellowteeth very happy. “But son, we must have a ceremony to honor your dead friends.” So they had a ceremony and from that point on, all the animals respected wolves because they had heard the story of Yellowteeth. All wolves were grey from that day on.
