How The Snake Lost His Legs

By: Cam

One day Snake was playing with Fox. “Why do you have legs? They don’t suit you,” said Fox. “I know. I’ll go see the Great Owl. He’ll know how to get them off” said Snake. Mean while Weasel was listening to their conversation. He didn’t want Snake to lose his legs. He wanted everybody to have legs. The next morning Snake set off on his journey to the Great Owl. On his way he had to climb four mountains to the forbidden forest where the Owl lived in a tree. As Snake approached the first mountain, Weasel set a trap for him. It was a hole covered with grass. But Snake was so light he walked right over it without falling in. The first mountain was rocky and snowy. Weasel took the secret passage to the top and made an avalanche for Snake. Snake was stuck but he was so slithery, he slipped right out. Weasel was mad. At the second mountain, he took the underground passageway but he didn’t know it was infested with Coyotes! Snake heard howls and wondered what was going on until he saw a shadow of a Coyote. Then he knew there were coyotes in the cave. Snake tried to run but the entrance was blocked. The Coyotes grabbed him and took him to their chief. The chief was very tall and he wore a rabbit skin cape. “What is your reason for being here?” The chief asked. “I seek the Great Owl so I can ask him how I can lose my legs.” said Snake. Snake told the chief about his quest for the Great Owl. After a lot of debate the chief let him go. When Snake got out of the cave it was dark outside so he set up camp for the night. As Snake was getting up, Weasel turned himself into a tree so Snake wouldn’t see him. As Snake approached the mountain of death, he saw how steep it was. But Snake was determined to find the Great Owl. Weasel was too scared to climb the mountain, so he turned back. Snake started to climb the mountain. He made it to the top with a couple of scratches and bruises. And he then just ran down the other side. He thought it would be harder than it was. When Snake walked up to the next mountain, he was so terrified of what lay ahead. There were death defying jumps and life threatening spikes. So he walked around the mountain, as Snake entered the forest a Coyote jumped out of the bushes and said, “Turn back now! There’s grave danger ahead.” But Snake just had to go on. When Snake was walking through the forest he saw shadows in the trees. He started to run. But he hadn’t gone far before he saw the Great Owl’s tree. He tried to climb it but the bark was so smooth that he slid down. Then he found a secret entrance. Snake finally found the Great Owl. “Who goes there?” said the Great Owl. “It is I, Snake. I seek you to ask if you could make my legs disappear.” “You have not climbed the fourth mystic mountain. After you do, you will get your wish”, said Owl. So, Snake set out to climb the fourth mountain. The start of the mountain was just gravel, it was easy. But then it started to snow on Snake. It was the winter part of the mountain. He dodged most of the spikes but he was stabbed a bit and he was bleeding. He saw a giant bolder racing toward him.

There were a lot of traps set for him but he dodged them all. Finally he reached the top of the mountain an then all of a sudden “POOF!” his legs were gone. He slithered down the mountain and all the way home.
