HOW THE RABBIT GOT HIS HEARING BACK

BY :ALEXANDRIA

Long ago there was a village that had had a terrible curse put upon it. An evil wizard came and stripped them of their hearing. One night when the moon was full the people called to the great rabbit to come to their village. The young rabbit got their message and set out to find the village.

There was something sticking out of the ground. It was long and white and there was a pink line in the middle. ”Tapico! Tapico!” called Tapico’s mother Omrick. The great rabbit turned around and saw Omrick standing there. “Get back here. Excuse me miss I think she’s right here.” “Well thank you for finding her.” Omrick said. “My name is Omrick. What’s yours?” “Ikotom” said the rabbit. “I’m visiting my old village. To help them out. They have a curse upon them from a wizard. I’ve brought potions  and medicine to get their hearing back.” “That sounds very interesting.” said Omrick. “Why don’t you stay with us for a while.” Ikotom told Omrick all about what he did. “That’s amazing” said Omrick. The village you were talking about that was under attack, we were moving out that day. My husband went back to get a few things, and he was killed in the attack.” “I know how you feel. My wife was killed by a hunter.” “I’m sorry about your loss.” “Mommy! Mommy! The big guys are here.” Tapiko cried. “What’s the matter? Who are the big guys?” “They are men that come and hunt rabbits. They will kill us if we don’t leave.” “ I have made a secret passage to get out.” They came to a brick room and in the corner there was a carpet. “There is a secret key.” Omrick said. “In this brick.” She pressed the brick and it opened. There was a golden key. She took it out and slid the green carpet away from a trap door that was hidden beneath it. When they got outside they started running as fast as they could. Soon they came to a hut. Omrick knocked on the door and the door opened. There was a rabbit just standing there in a motionless state. Finally the rabbit’s eyes opened wide. “Hello father” said Omrick. “What brings you here? And who is that young man? How is my granddaughter?” “This is Ikotom. There are men who hunt rabbits with guns. He found Tapico when she hid from me.” Omrick replied. “Come in. Come in. You must be exhausted. My name is Reco, and this is my  home.” Ikotom looked around. There were pots hung on rack, a wooden table with flowers in a vase in the middle of it. “So what brings you here Ikotom?” asked Reco. “I am here to help my old village that is under attack by an evil wizard. He has taken their hearing away. Thank you for your hospitality. I have you go now.” said Ikotom. “I want to get there before sun down.” “Goodbye.” said Ikotom. “Goodbye” said Omrick. Then Ikotom set out for the village. For hours he walked through thorn bushes, branches, and flowers. Soon he came to this clearing. There he saw huts and fires all around. There were rabbits hopping everywhere. “What’s that Jenny? Were you speaking? I can’t hear you. I can’t hear you Jenny! Oh my goodness! These people have gone crazy!” said Ikotom. Ikotom walked over to the rabbit, took a potion out of his bag and shoved it in to the man’s mouth. Suddenly the man stopped yelling. “I can hear! I can hear the birds!” The man shouted. ”Earl” Ikotom heard a rabbit shout. “Come in here now and stop acting crazy. I’m sorry if he’s been bothering you, but he’s gone a little crazy.” “But it’s true I’ve cured him!” said Ikotom. “And now can you hear? “I was out when the attack happened. I assume you are the medicine man.” “That’s what they call you anyway, ask Chief Black Rabbit. He will tell you what to do?” She pointed at an odd looking hut. So Ikotom walked over and knocked on the door. “Come in”, someone said a low voice. Ikotom stepped   inside the hut. There sat a rabbit around a campfire. “You are the one they call the medicine man. Am I correct? You have come along way Ikotom.” “H-how do now my name?” “I know many things”, said the chief. Come in. Sit down with me. Ikotom sat down on a stump next to the rabbit. He told Ikotom all about the attack. “I came hear to help said Ikotom”. He showed Ikotom around the village but one thing puzzled Ikotom. Why could he hear and why were the village rabbits afraid of him. Ikotom figured that he was out of the village that day but Ikotom asked a villager that he had met before but she said he was there that day. He was gone. Like he had just vanished and then came back. It made Ikotom curious. That night Black Rabbit showed Ikotom to a hut where there was food and finally when Ikotom was asleep he heard loud chanting. Ikotom followed the chanting and it lead to the chief’s hut. He was chanting to himself about an attack of some sort. Maybe the attack of the village? Ikotom thought to himself. Soon we will attack again said Black Rabbit. He was talking to some one. But Ikotom couldn’t see anyone! Maybe he was delirious Ikotom thought. Suddenly he collapsed as if he had had a heart attack. But then Ikotom saw his chest moving. He had just fallen asleep. For the next couple of weeks Ikotom stayed there and cured more and more villagers. But he still kept an eye on the chief. One day it was time for him to leave but the chief wasn’t there to say goodbye. As Ikotom was about to leave, he saw smoke coming from one of the huts. It was the wizard. “It’s him. It’s the wizard”, said a rabbit. Oneby one he started destroying huts. Ikotom stood in front of him and said, “Stop!” But he kept on. Ikotom took a book and a potion out of his bag. He made a circle with a star in the middle and then opened the book and started chanting. Just as the wizard was about to hit a mother and child, he vanished. Ikotom stayed there an extra few months to help them repay the damage. A woman came up to Ikotom and said, “Ikotom you are always welcome here.”
