BUS TRANSPORTATION

École Robert H. Smith School has a number of students who are bussed by the Winnipeg School Division. In order for this system to be worry free for all involved, cooperation among parents, school and transportation is very important.

As parents, there are some points to consider in using this transportation system.

A) If your child is not attending school on a certain day, please notify the school office, callback program, and through it the Lunch Program if applicable, and King Transportation. King Transportation provides buses on contract to the Division. Their phone number is 586-8800. Unless both are notified, that bus may sit at your child's pickup point waiting for five to ten minutes, causing possible anxiety among all those to be picked up later, and causing a late arrival at school for everyone on the bus.

B) Have your child dressed and waiting at the pickup point on time so that the bus can arrive at school in time to give the children some playground time and an opportunity to mix with the rest of the students.

C) If there is any change in the normal schedule of your child's arrival at, or departure from, school, please notify the school office or send a note to the teacher. Also notify King Transportation. This will help prevent a child inadvertently being left behind and keep the bus from waiting for a child no longer in the school. This is very important in the case of a parent picking up a bussed student from the school.

D) Label all lunch boxes and school bags with the school's name, as well as the child's name and address. This will allow the bus driver to return any articles left on the bus.

E) Any items with sharp edges, i.e., skates, are dangerously unsafe for the riders on the bus. These items, as well as boots and runners, must be transported in enclosed athletic bags on the school bus, and stowed under the child's seat. Brooms, hockey sticks, shovels, skis, etc. are not allowed on the bus. They do not fall within the Manitoba Regulations 465188 in the regulations respecting School Buses. In general, any object which is being carried onto the bus from home should be packaged in such a way as to reduce any potential hazard.

All of the above will help the school to keep track of the bussed students and will help ensure their safety. Bussed students are met on arrival by an educational assistant on duty. Students are also supervised at the 3:30 boarding by our educational assistant, Mrs. Thomson. The school is responsible for notifying King Transportation concerning various in-service days when classes are closed, and also those days which require a change of arrival and/or departure times.

Your cooperation in this matter is much appreciated.
