STUDENT SERVICES

Guidance/Counselling

A school counsellor is a teacher who is qualified by training and experience to provide guidance and counselling to students within a school setting. Counselling is a process that provides a setting for students to explore feelings, examine information, and consider options for problem solving, keeping in mind the best interests of the student.

At École River Heights School we have a guidance counsellor who is available if students need help solving a problem.

The counsellor can provide students with:

  ·       information about educational choices, careers, drugs, alcohol, personal matters

· help with a problem with friends

· help with problems about school

· help with a problem at home or outside school

· help with filling out high school applications

· mediation and conflict resolution

The counsellor is sometimes asked by teachers, parents or friends to check things out with a student who may seem troubled. Students do not need to wait until the situation becomes unbearable. Students can at any time leave a note or stop the counsellor in the hall to let them know you would like to talk. Your feelings and concerns are important. They will be respected and kept confidential.

Child Guidance Clinic

The Child Guidance Clinic is an educational support service agency, which provides specialized help for school children in collaboration with school personnel, parents, other agencies and clinicians. École River Heights School has the services of a multidisciplinary team, which consists of the following professionals: reading clinician, speech/language pathologist, psychologist, social worker, psychiatrist and audiologist.

There are many reasons why children may need assistance from the Child Guidance Clinic, but the difficulties usually addressed are in the following areas: family, social, emotional, learning, mental health, behaviour, and communication. Clinicians may be involved in a variety of activities and interventions including: assessment and treatment of school children; consultation with school personnel, parents and other agencies; work with families; prevention activities (i.e., workshops, parenting courses, research).

A referral to the Child Guidance Clinic can be made through the school by the family, by contacting the Child Guidance worker in your child's school or by telephoning/writing the Clinic directly.

Integrated Special Education

École River Heights School offers an Integrated Special Education program, which provides assistance to students with a variety of special needs. The support staff works in collaboration with the classroom teachers and other professionals to meet the needs of each student. Meetings are scheduled to discuss needs, develop individualized programs and monitor student progress. Students receive one-on-one or small group instruction from the Special Education teachers, as well as, direct support in regular classrooms from educational assistants.

Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

The goal of the Program for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students is to provide specialized supports that are more varied and intensive than those available in the student’s home school. Students are integrated into the regular classroom programs with support from ASL trained educational assistants and computerized note takers as needed. An Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) is developed for each student and implemented by the educational team with the support of the half-time teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Students may also receive support services from a speech/language pathologist, psychologist or audiologist from the Child Guidance Clinic.

 Library Resource Centre

The automated library is an integral part of the school and is used to assist learners in increasing their information literacy skills. Students make excellent use of the library’s books, magazines, computers, and access to the Internet.

For both research and pleasure reading, there is a wide selection of French and English novels, reference materials and encyclopedias, thereby providing for the differentiated learning requirements of all students.

The library is open from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and from 12:10 to 12:40 p.m. during the lunch hour.

Circulation

Books may be kept for 2 cycles and magazines for 1 cycle. If a student has not finished with the material, it may be renewed once.

Overdue Materials

The library sends a weekly list of students who have overdue books to homeroom teachers. If your name appears on the list, please return your book promptly. If there is a problem, come to the library and speak to the library staff. Students with overdues must renew or return their books before they are allowed to borrow other material.

If you need help, be sure to ask the library staff. They will be happy to help you find your library materials.
