SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURESWho May Attend E.R.H.SAll students may attend École River Heights School in one of our regular programs: grade 7 and 8 English, grade 7 and 8 Continuing Immersion or grade 7 and 8 Late Entry French Immersion, subject to available space. Priority is given to residents of the immediate catchment area. Registration and AnnouncementsAll students are expected to be in their homerooms by 8:50 a.m. and in the period 4 class at 12:45 p.m. for registration. Announcements are read in the classroom each morning and these are posted by the office for student information. Additional announcements are made over the P.A. before or after "O Canada" in the morning. Attendance and PunctualityRegular attendance and punctuality are important for academic success.
School OrganizationEvery student is part of a homeroom class. Homeroom teachers teach at least one and often two subjects to their homeroom. It is from the homeroom teacher that a student receives his/her locker, lock, class schedule, report cards, newsletters and all other general information. Student council, fundraisers, intramurals and other activities are organized on a homeroom basis. The homeroom teacher is generally the first contact for students and parents/guardians, as questions and concerns arise (student progress, attendance, etc.). Daily Schedule
Valuables and Lost and FoundStudents are reminded not to bring large sums of
money, or valuables to
school. There is a Lost and Found container in the gymnasium where
students may
check for missing articles. Items that are found are put in the Lost
& Found
container. The school cannot accept responsibility for items left
behind be it one day, or
six months. Items of clothing are put out at parent conferences for
pick up. All unclaimed
items of clothing are donated to the Salvation Army at the year's end. Dress CodeStudents attending École River Heights School are expected to wear appropriate clothing at all times. Examples of clothing which would be considered inappropriate are: Homework and Student AgendaStudents are expected to complete all homework assigned to them. This may include daily assignments, projects, reading and reviewing for tests or exams. A student agenda planner will be available to all students during the first week of school. Students are expected to purchase the agenda planner for $5.00. The agenda is intended as an aide in organizing studies and homework schedules and will be referred to by all teachers. The school maintains a homework page on out website. Lunch Hour ArrangementsBecause of the limited lunch facilities we encourage all students who live within a 15 minute walking area to return home for lunch; those unable to are permitted to eat at school if the lunch area rules are followed. Lunch is from 11:50 - 12:20 in the gym balcony. Following lunch, students may choose one of several options for the remainder of the noon hour. Students purchasing food/beverages outside the school
(7-Eleven,
Community Club) must consume these prior to entering the school. Lockers and TextbooksEach student is assigned a locker for their books and outer clothing. Sometimes lockers are shared by two students, who are responsible for their property and the lock. School owned locks will be provided to all students by the school and combinations will be recorded by the homeroom teacher on the first day of school. No laser or privately owned locks are permitted. Locks left on students' lockers after July 1 will be removed by the custodians. A standard text may be issued to students in some subjects. Students are responsible for ensuring proper care of the texts. If a school text is damaged or lost, repayment in part or whole will be necessary. Public TelephoneStudents have access to the pay phone before and after school hours. In case of an emergency, they may be allowed to use the office phone. Staff MeetingsStaff meetings are regularly scheduled for the first Tuesday of each month. On these days, students are dismissed at 2:50 p.m. CommunicationA monthly newsletter is prepared detailing information for students and parents. The September newsletter is mailed to each student's residence and subsequent ones are prepared for distribution in the first day of each month. The establishment and maintenance of parent-teacher contact is a crucial component to students' success. To this end, all parents are contacted by the homeroom teachers in early September to establish that rapport. Parents are invited to an initial Meet-the-Teacher evening in September as well as two "formal" parent-teacher conferences during the year. Teachers will phone or write to parents if /when concerns arise. Parents are invited to contact teachers whenever questions arise throughout the year. The electronic sign on Corydon Avenue announces current and upcoming events and celebrates student achievements. Email between teacher, parents and students is encouraged as a method of communication e.g. homework can be sent in to teachers directly, or as a way of avoiding "telephone tag", where teacher and parent are having difficulty getting in touch with each other by phone. A place is provided on the registration form for parents wishing to leave their email address for the school. Information is available from our web-site. The homework page on-line is especially helpful in providing information about major assignments and tests. SmokingSmoking is prohibited on school property as well as at school sponsored activities. Admittance to SchoolStudents are allowed into the school building only after 8:30 a.m. unless they are involved in an activity, e.g. Band practice, basketball, track practices, Math Club or other activities called by a teacher for early morning. Students can access the school by the Grosvenor and Corydon entrances, the two west entrances facing the River Heights Community Club as well as the receiving doors south entrance. Those coming to school by bicycle can enter by the compound door. All doors except the receiving door (south-east corner) and the parking lot door are locked at 11:50 and 12:45. Parents are asked not to drop their children off in the teachers’ parking lot. The teachers pay for the use of those spots so the parking lot must be readily available to them. The parking lot should be avoided due to safety reasons. Cars pulling in and backing up create congestion and are dangerous to students being dropped off. At dismissal time, all students are expected to clear the building within 15 minutes unless staying for a supervised activity. IllnessStudents becoming ill at school will be monitored until parents can be contacted. Sick students will not be allowed to leave the school until the office has first contacted parents. Serious OffencesÉcole River Heights School emphasizes an atmosphere of respect of self, others and property and provides a safe environment for its students. Consequently, certain actions will be dealt with by the school. Some of these include: A Student Code of Conduct has been implemented and is shared with all students and parents. |
