MIDDLE YEARS

École River Heights operates as a middle years school. Middle years programs are designed to bridge the gap between the sheltered adult led elementary school experience and the subject focused independence of senior high. These middle years programs meet the specific developmental needs of early adolescence.

École River Heights School endeavours to meet the needs of the whole student; to address the academic, social, and emotional needs that are so vital at this stage of development. Goals are met by providing a wide range of activities and experiences for growth in a safe nurturing environment. A strong and varied academic program meets the needs of the diverse learning styles of our students. A full range of activities such as sports, music, drama and community service meets their physical, social and emotional needs and produces well rounded students.

Through our middle years program, our school provides a positive school climate within which the needs of our students can best be met. The students at École River Heights School have the opportunity to grow and develop to their potential in a safe and comfortable learning environment.

GRADE 7

Welcome to the grade 7 program at École River Heights Middle Years School. The grade 7 program at École River Heights School is a safe and exciting learning environment for your son or daughter to begin his or her middle years education. The teachers are committed to providing for the academic, social, physical and emotional needs of their students in a caring and challenging environment.

Homeroom classes are located together in one defined area of the school, making for a comfortable, community atmosphere. Increased time in each child's homeroom, through homeroom registration and multi-subject instruction, allows for quality interaction and rapport between teacher and students and classmates.

The grade 7 team works hard to achieve a climate of respect; respect for learning and for others. Monthly grade 7 English team assemblies provide an opportunity for students to focus on respect through sharing interests, abilities, and accomplishments. At the monthly assembly students from each homeroom are recognized for their outstanding contributions in the areas of citizenship, achievement in academics and sports, and leadership. A favourite assembly is the Student Showcase which features student talent, hobbies, and accomplishments.

Enrichment activities are an important focus of programming. Speakers and presenters, often parents of the students themselves, enrich classroom learning by providing first hand insights into a range of topics such as meteorology, chemistry, conservation, financial management, human rights, and disabilities. Students also have the opportunity to enrich their learning and experiences by attending a variety of community venues such as the Gas Station Theatre, the University of Manitoba science and agriculture labs, the Forks Tourism Manitoba display, the Museum of Man and Nature, the Centennial Library and Imax.

Special needs of students are also met by teacher assistants, peer helper support, and diversification of learning materials and styles. We provide all our students with the opportunity to explore their interests and skills, and develop new ones; to gain new knowledge and deepen existing learning; to extend friendships; and to mature and grow as learners and as citizens of their community. We do all we can to make the learning experience an enjoyable and exciting one.

GRADE 8

The grade 8 year is one of maturation and transition towards high school. Students are given more responsibility within and outside of the school. The Practical Arts classes are held at Kelvin High School once per cycle for an afternoon. Grade eight students walk or take the bus independently and are responsible for arriving and behaving appropriately in the high school setting. Field trips within the city continue in grade 8 but out of town trips may also be planned such as skiing, camping and trips to other cities.

The grade 8 class is encouraged to take leadership roles within the school on student council, teams and the physical education leadership team. Opportunities are also provided for leadership during assemblies, the science fair and closing exercises, as well as representing our school at Quantum and other events.
